I took my 2014 z51 A6 to my first hpde yesterday. 15 minutes into the 2nd session the transmission overheating warning came on and sent the car into limp mode. I watched the transmission temp in the 3rd session climb again but pulled in before it got too hot again.

I see that this is common issue. Has anyone successfully tried the heat wrap on the exhaust next to the transmission? Any other ideas to remedy this without breaking the bank?

I saw someone post the kit from LG, but really hoping to not have to spend $2,500+. Does anyone have experience with the LG kit solving this problem?

installing the Zo6/GS rear intake vents can help pull more air in to keep it cool. Also adding the bigger trans cooler and fan from the zo6. some have done this and taken the original z51 cooler and added it in to have 2 coolers but that will definitely be a bit more work.
both of those options are not too expensive but require taking the car apart if you are comfortable with that. beyond that its gonna get pricey adding the larger A6 pan from LG would probably be my third step. i only have the rear vents on mine and only drag/roll race not hpde yet so doubt just that will be enough.

11k miles, coupe, fresh oil and changed to dot 4 brake fluid. Transmission fluid is original.

wondering if degradation because of the age of transmission fluid played a part in this, even though mileage is low?

are you original owner? if not, had vehicle sat for a while before you got it?? original fluid could've been a problem!! outside temps when you were racing??

Not the original owner but it likely did a fair amount of sitting before me being 9 years old with 11k miles. I’m in Florida. It was 90+ degrees and very humid from morning rain.

are you aware the z51 has cooling capability/ducting for the xmsn + differential??

What would the larger pan do? Specific heat capacity of the fluid remains the same so it will take more heat for the transmission temp to get to the undesired temp but it will get there. IOW, all I see you doing is buying a little more time till it gets to temp.

Back in the day with the 7.3 Powerstroke, the engineer on the transmission team mentioned that they had tried a bigger capacity pan. It didn't change anything significant and they had done temp measurements all over the pan. The thing that worked was the 6.0 transmission cooler which was about 3 times the size of the transmission cooler that came on the 7.3 trucks. All I see the larger capacity does is take longer to heat up but once up to temp, it stays hot longer.

First you need to determine if it is really overheating or a bad sensor.

You need a independent way to determine trans temp.

Not using any of the cars sensors, the easiest way I can think of is using a thermocouple on the bottom of the trans pan with a min / max feature. This should give you a good idea of the fluid temp.

If memory is correct, they once made temp strips that you could mount anywhere to measure max temp, in your case on the pan. One shot desposibleable item. Not sure if its still available.

The later C7s have two trans coolers one in front of the radiator (lays flat) and the one in the left rear. So the real cure is to add another in the front. The lines are run through the drivers side rocker

I'm sure it does, what was added was the Trans cooler in front of and below the radiator

Had all the same issues running HPDE. Added Z06 quarter panel scoops. Added LG bigger pan. Added LG cooler. No change, still 12 minutes overheat.
Ran lines to the front of the car through the rocker area. Installed cooler up front with a fan.
Now it runs 30 minutes no issues. 225.
I switched to the zr1 nose and Added the trans cooler to the driver side, put it on a switch. I will dig up the pictures and post them. I also had issues with the transmission venting fluid when it got hot. The factory tube just dumps on the top of the tranny. Extended the tube and added a catch can.
Just ran two days at Ozark, 87 and 89 air temps
No issues ran 225 and no fluid in the ccan. Bought the car Nov 2014, took years to get it right. 30,000 track miles on it now.
