Default Widest Tires for my wheels?

hi there
I was wondering if anybody knows if i can put wider tires on my 1993 factory wheels

Original Equipment Front 255/45-17 8.5 inch wheel

Original Equipment Rear 285/40-17 9.5 inch wheel

What is the widest tires i can get for my wheels without hurting the car?

Any suggestions
thanks
Bruce

If you obey the tire manufacturers' recommendations, then that's as wide as you can go. You can squeeze slightly bigger tires on those wheels (maybe as much as 275 front, 295 rear) but the tires will be operating in conditions that they aren't designed for.

Do a search this is a pretty well covered topic.

I don't know of a wider tire that you can run out back because the next size that would work for you would be 315/35/17 and you need 17x11" rims for that.

I've heard of some people running 275/40/17 up front on the 17x8.5", but as steve9899 stated that is not the optimun rim size.

One idea is to but two other 17x9.5" rims to use up front and then run the 275/40/17 or you can upgrade your rims like I did
