I think it depends on your rears for any active handling issues. That front with the stock rear tires should be fine. There is a .98" difference in the stock C5 rear tire and the stock front. There would be no problem with clearance I run a 285/30/18 on the front of my car. A 255/40/17 will fit fine on your 17" x 8.5 wheel. I have heard of people running as large as a 275/40/17 on that rim but I think that is about as wide as you would want to go. Now suspension is something I can not give you a good answer on, my car has stock suspension and it seems to handle better, but I also upgraded my rear tires to 315/30/18. Here is a link to a tire calculator to compare diameter and other things on different size tires. This way you can compare tires and see what kind of slope you have front rear to front depending on what tires you have. Mine are .71" slope from rear to front and I have had no problems with active handling.
