Just moved up from a 94 to a 99 Coupe. Love the upgrade! but now I am casting about for a new set of tires for the C5 that are comfortable and quiet, yet agile enough for mountain and backroad cruising. The OEM GY runflats don't seem to fill the bill at all. Probably put on non-runflats, but what?
If thats what you are looking for, I was happy with the Falken 502s. Smoothest ride Ive had yet on my 92. They dont make the 502s anymore. Falken has replaced that model with FK512s. Lots of people rave about the Firestone Firehawks when it comes to ride. I dont have any experience with them, so Im not sure about that.
Thanks for the tip, McShagger. I'll check the FK512s out. I have heard the Firehawks are good, if a bit pricey. But I guess those who play must pay.
My wife and I are getting WATU RYD ready for a Sept cruise of Rt. 66, IL to CA, a big trip during which we do not want to listen to the GY OEM runflats.
Location: Just a little outside San Antonio, Texas
Re: The best cruising tire??? (RVers)
Don't exclude run-flats just because the stock GY are crappy. I installed Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season Zero Pressure tires and love 'em. Much, much quieter than the stock tires, great ultra performance dry and wet, plus run-flat security that a non-run-flat can't provide.
I used TireRack to get the best price (caught them on sale ) then went to National Tire and Battery and had them match the same price out the door (meaning, I had them include taxes, etc., to match the TireRack price).
Thanks. Your mag red Vette looks really cool. Will investigate the Pilot Sports. Just did the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Boone yesterday, stayed the night at Boone, ate at a great Italian restaurant, gained 5 pds, and did the return trip at the highest rate of knots the bikers and van folks would allow us. Mt. Mitchell was fogged in, but a yellow Vert from Michigan was coming off the mountain and we hooked up for some cool Vette conversation.
Thanks for the input, Yoggi. Your Torch Red Vert looks beautiful.
Speaking of the Blue Ridge Parkway, did the Maggie Valley/Cherokee leg today to 441 and up to Clingman's dome. You could see forever. All in all, a wonderful drive with-- wait for it! -- nobody in front almost all the way! Gotta love an empty Parkway.
Looks like my shortlist for tires now is down to two -- Pilots or Firehawks.
Hello RVers. I am a new forum member and bought my first Corvette.04vert
Took the GY tires off right away and installed Mich Pilot Sport AS non-run-flat.
Completely satisfied. I have also done the Blue Ridge several times on a Harley. Looking forward to the first Vette trip.
Not to confuse the issue but, I am now running GoodYear GS-D3's. They are super! I previously had Michelin Pilot Sports but was very dissatisfied. Had 2 bad on back that were swapped and never did get the fronts balanced well. So I went to the GY GS-D3's. There is a curve on Harding Place road that could only be taken at around 47MPH with Michelins before they would break loose. The Goodyears hold past 50MPH. As far as ride, They honestly ride like a touring tire. I have never heard one bad thing said about the Goodyear GS D3's. around $200 at tirerack.
