Widest tire for 8.5" rim?

I have a set of 16"x8.5" ARE rims I can't seem to sell. I love the way they look on my '87 but its an AX car and and I currently run 17" ZR-1 Wheels on it.

What is the widest rubber I can mount on 8.5" wheels if I want to use them as backups?

The widest section width you can run is dependent on aspect ratio - the lower the aspect ratio, the narrower the range of acceptable wheel widths for a given tire section width.

Go to http://www.tirerack.com and search the 255/50R-16 size. Pick a brand then click on "Specs", which will include the recommended wheel width range for all sizes offered in that particular make/model tire.

You can then select other candidate 16-inch sizes and repeat the process. Recommended wheel width sizes are based on standards promulgated by The Tire and Rim Association.

I am going to be in the market for wheels in a month or so (scheduled for after spring thaw). What offset are they? If they are for your 87, can you put up a picture?
