My 1997 C5 has 19,500 miles and the rear stock run-flats are almost bald.
I understand that this is normal on these tires, but I am not sure what tires to replace them with.
First of all, should I stick with runflats or should I buy nonrunflats.
Second, what brand, or specific tires are recommended. I use the car for everyday driving - both city and highway. I try to avoid rain and always avoid snow. I am not looking to spend a fortune, but I also don't want anything that is going to take away from the car (in both ride and appearance).
Third, the front tires are still in good shape. Are there any disadvantages to keeping the stock GoodYears on front and going with something different on the rear??
Any help is greatly appreciated!
By the way, last weekend was the first time I was able to drive my car since Thanksgiving.........got to love those midwest winters!!!!!
Re: Replacing tires on my C5 --- Need Help!!! (silvercar)
Just got off the phone with a rep at Tire Rack.....he brought up a good point with the Kumho (or any tire that is not runflat) on the C5.....should a tire go flat, not only are you stranded, but 9 times out of 10 your rims are ruined as well.
He talked me into ordering the Firestone Firehawks instead. Sounds like this is a good tire.

I hope not....I have a set of 99 wheels on my 87....

Search, Search and when you're done Searching, Search again.
Seriously, if I had $1 for every time this question has been asked, I'd have a fully prepped T1 Z06, with an enclosed trailer and nice tow vehicle in my driveway.
Not trying to be a jerk, but if people would pause for one minute to search before they posted the 1st question that came to mind, there'd be a lot less clutter on these boards.

Stranded???...I keep a can of Fix-a-flat along with a small tire repair kit (plugs/glue,etc.) in the car, I've had numerous flats...NEVER been stranded.
"9 times out of 10 your rims are ruined as well"????:bs Unless your one of those idiots that drives for miles on a flat tire.
"He talked me into ordering the Firestone Firehawks instead." ;) ...sure did.
Re: Replacing tires on my C5 --- Need Help!!! (BADMUDE)
This question gets asked every day by someone, somewhere. Here's my 2 cents: run flats are noisy, ride hard and handle poorly. However they are better than non-run flats with a nail in them. I chose to buy non-run flats at 22,000 miles and I still had at least 5,000 miles of rubber left. I love the quiet ride and improved handling I now have. In winter run flats suck, they never warm up like non-run flats. If you get a flat on a run flat you must drive to a tire store for repair and hope that they have the equipment to work on run flats, not everybody does. I have a flat repair kit, a bottle of slime (water soluable fix-a-flat compound) a little scissors jack, a compressor, wrench and a cell phone with me. The comfort of a better, quieter ride is an offset to the comfort of knowing you can still drive on a run flat. Only you can make the decision of what you're comfortable with. I felt that flats are not that common and blow-outs causing a damaged wheel are rarer still.
