I'm looking for a set of adapters in order to run some 17" American Racing wheels on my 87 for autocross use. These wheels came off a 92 so I should be able to use a 3/4" thick adapter like the ones in the catalogs.
Unfortunately, those types of adapters are for OEM-type Corvette wheels that have recesses in the mounting flange. It looks like that the acorn lugs used to bolt the adapters on the hub stick out and must fit into the 17" wheel recesses. My ARE wheels have a smooth mounting flange with no recesses.
They will bolt up with no problem; my concern is whether or not they will clear suspension components once tires are mounted. The Vette Brakes adapter I had looked at is 3/4" wide and is designed specifically for mounting late (88-96) wheels onto 84-88 cars with 16" wheels.
I might try swapping a pair of the AFS wheels from my 92 and see what that does. If there is sufficient clearance, then it will solve a lot of questions about tires I can run for autocross and open track events. I'm not sure if it's even a good idea to run adapters for track days or high-speed autocross.
fI'm having the same problem, I bought a set of y2K's and they also have the flat flange..I was reading a Mustang catalog and saw that Stockton Wheel out of California carries a wide range of adapters..I'm going to contact them and will post what I find here :banghead:
stockton tire in california can make an adapter that will work for us. they recommend 1 1/2" and will make them with the flat flange. Cost may be prohibitive though, they quoted me $333 shipped to central texas. I thinkk i'm going to do it anyway mainly because I really like the wheels and tires and I already have so much money in the setup. If you'd like, I'll let you know how it turns out.....
Thanks for the update. After talking to a couple of people, I am beginning to think that using adapters for open track events amy not be the best thing to do.
I'm going to think about some AFS 17x9.5" wheels that have the correct 38mm offset for the earlier C4's.
