Re: How to remove clearcoat on 2000 C5 highpolish rims? (Hogs)

You should not have to beasd blast.
I have not tryed it ,but:
Try Permatex spray on gasket remover. This product is available at most auto parts stores. It takes old ratty clearcoat off fast! Then wash with warm soapy water and dry it.
Or
Contact your local paint job shop or talk to the folks at Eastwood Company. They can fix you up with the right product. Most clear coat removers are very similar to the thick type of paint removers that you brush on--wait a while--then wash off with a hose.
Clearcoat types:
Acrylic-Melamine - the standard for many years and still the most common, especially on
lower priced cars. Excellent durability (excellent gloss retention), relatively scratch resistant,
but has poor acid etch resistance. There are silane or other modified acylic-melamines
(from our competitors) that have somewhat better etch, but they may give up something
in scratch or durability.
Epoxy - Acrylic - Acid (Diamond Coat, NCT) - good durability, excellent etch resistance,
fair scratch resistance (definitely poorer than acrylic-melamines).
Polyurethanes (2K Isos) - difficult to classify because there have been a number of
different versions. Those on luxury cars have excellent properties. Generally, good to
excellent durability, fair to excellent scratch resistance, fair to excellent etch resistance.
Good luck!
