Default EVO WHEELS - 20X 10.5 REAR AND 18 X 10.5 FRONT - OPINIONS PLEASE !

Looking at the EVO c-5 corvette axis sl - 705 - nice looking wheels , I'm just not that familiar with tires sizes and what fits on a 02-vert .. not lowered
.. figure the 20 in wheel in rear should take up any space I now have ..
Also any suggestions on tires would be helpful .. ..Joe

I agree - they are some nice looking wheels. Its a shame that Weld does not make a 19 to go with the 20's. Just my opinion but the 2" difference between front and rear will look bad next to a 20/19 set up.

The 20" tires will not close the gap in your wheel well because the overall size will be the same. Best choice would be 285/30/20 vs the stock 275/40/18. You will need to lower if you want the 3" wheel well gap gone.

The Potenza SO3 Pole Positions are a nice choice. The 20's are in the mid 200 dollar range from Tire Rack. Check them out.

Thank you Mark , I appreciate your advice .. but I don't understand how the gap does not close if I am going to a 20" tire from an 18" -- don't I pick up 2 inches ??? .. also what the largest tire I can put on the 18 x 10.5 front wheels w/o getting into trouble ... Thanks again .. Joe

You're assuming that since the rim diameter increased 2",the tires did too. Not necessarily true. The tire diameter establishes the fender gap,not the rim diameter. Think about it.

Accurate,

The side wall of the 20" tire is much smaller than the stock 18" tire. In order to keep the speedo and traction control systems functioning properly you need to keep the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combo as close to stock as possible. Also you will need to keep the rear overall diameter larger than the front overall diameter as the on board computer looks to see the difference.

Do a search on the forum for tire diameter topics and see what others have to say regarding this. Im sure someone here has posted the stock diameters.

Im not sure what the largest size would be without rubbing. I know some here have gone as wide as 275/35/18's on the front. It been my experience that the wider a front tire you use the more it wants to hunt the "crown" of the road.

You should also ask yourself why your getting this wheel/tire set up. Is it for looks or performance or a little of both. If your after performance mainly, then stay away from 20" wheels. They are heavy and the side wall of the tire has little flex for drag strip use. Little flex = lots of spin on quick launches.

I could be off base here but I think these rims are more for show than anything and they sure do look nice. If this is why your getting them then dont worry about the widest tire, get something thats going to drive and ride nice like a 245/45/18 or a 265/35/18. These choices will give you the best of both worlds in ride comfort, looks, and performance.

Hope I helped and im not to off base with what I said.

The 20" rear is just a little taller than stock. You will still need to lower it to make it look  I wouldn't go with the 10.5 front. Do they make a 9.5? I have the Bridgestones on my car and like them very much.
good luck

I would not suggest going with a 18/20 combo. You need to maintain a fairly close overall tire size front to back or else the ABS will be goofed. While you can do this via "plus sizing" your tires, they will look odd due to the differences in side wall heights. If you're not worried about losing the ABS then go for some tire sizes that have similar sidewalls.

Good post, apart from that, WELD are still advertizing these in a big way. I know, I have been trying to buy a set for months. No one has them. If you know anyone in Florida who actually has a set, I want to see them up close.

Thanks

i agree with Perry. 10.5 in the front is too wide and would stick out past the fender. 10 inch wide is the widest we have seen available for the front, but with the correct offset (usually only available in a custom wheel hre/fikse).
