Trouble with HI Def Radio signal

I installed a Pioneer AVHP 4100 radio and GEXP-20HD unit in my vette. The sound of high def in the FM band is phenominal. The signal in the AM band comes and goes, making it anoying. Got any ideas on how to make the AM HD work better or to disable the AM high def?
