Question on wheel sizes....

I have an opportunity to buy some 17X9.5 wheels for my '86, but they are a 56mm offset instead of the stock 38mm. Do I really need to get the adapters? They are about $120 a pair, and it wouldn't make it worth the deal to spend $240 on them. Anybody running 17X9.5 wheels with the ZR1 offset on an earlier C4 without spacers? If so, any troubles?
