I'm looking at a set of 275/40/17's for my '90. $127 each. Avon Tech M550 A/S. All-season ultra high performance category:

Does anyone have these, what can you tell me about them? Looks like #1 ranking at tirerack.

Avon Tyres (pronounced Avin ... those wacky Brits) has been around for over 119 years and produce some excellent tires and even are the OE manufacturer for cars from Rolls Royce and Bently.

The Avon Tech M550 is an Ultra High Performance All-Season tire which does almost everything very well

good ride quality
low road noise
decent bad weather grip
decent dry grip
average wear

these tires are produced in the US and were designed utilizing the Tire Rack website survey results which greatly reduced the developement cost of the tire which is why they are so, cost effective

good choice when looking for a well rounded, do everything, inexpensive tire but, not a good choice for ultimate handling and track/AutoX use

Luke, thanks for the input. Sounds like the Avon's are an excellent choice for the street. Since I drive year round, a summer-only tire would seem like a lousy choice.

How about "pushing it" on windy mountain roads......is this tire solid and responsive?

Luke, thanks. My local NTB will be ordering them from tirerack, less 10%, and installing them in the next couple weeks

Who owns Avon now? Is it Sumitomo?

Cooper bought Avon (merged?) and they are now Cooper-Avon. Somehow I think they also have something to do with Mickey Thomson tires also.

I purchased these exact tires for my 95 BMW 540I, size 245x40x18. They were rated the best tires this year by a tire rack survey. I have owned them since July. Nice tires.

One of my co-workers put a set on his '99 T/A last year. Loved their ride/handling, but says they don't look like they'll last too long...
