Default 98 wagon wheels onto an 86?

I have a line on a set of wagon wheels offf a 98 - 17 X 8.5 up front 18 X 9.5 out back. Will they fit an early 86 without using spacers?

You might have trouble with the rear ones. They might rub on the inside as they will sit in about 1 1/8" more than your current wheels. Even if they don't rub they will look funny being so tucked in. A 1" spacer will solve that problem. You can pick them up on eBay or from www.vbandp.com.

Thanks for the info - but I can't use spacers. The car spends a good deal of time on the track - and many of the sanctioning bodies do not allow spacers!

When you say "sit in" are you saying that the inside edges of the tires will be 1 1/8 inch further in toward the midline of the car - or are you saying that the outside of the tires will be set in an inch from where the originals sat (almost flush with the body panels)

Since both wheels are the same width, 17x9.5" and 18x9.5" and the only thing changing is the offset, both scenarios you describe will be true. That is why I caution you that not only will it look funny, but it might actually rub on the inside.

here is another source for adapters

you should at least think about using
3/4 inch spacers up front,
to keep the same steering geometry

I wish I could use adapters - but they are not allowed by the racing organizations that this car frequents! It's a safety issue. There have been several accidents on various tracks caused by the failure of a spacer or an adaptor!
