Default Luke, I have a question....

Hey Luke,

I read THIS article about Run Flat Tires and what I read really concerns me.

I am not sure if this article has been brought up on this forum before but I couldn't find any evidence of it.

Part of the article states:

"I contacted Tiffany Bryant, spokesperson for Bridgestone/Firestone USA, and Dan Guiney, spokesperson for Yokohama Tire Company. They told me that the Firestone SZ50EP RFT and the Yokohama AVS Sport Run-Flat are, also, rated for up to 50 miles of 55-mph run-flat operation, however, after any run-flat incident, neither can be repaired and both must be scrapped."

Is this true? If not can you provide any documentation to refute these allegations? Thanks for your time

Self-supporting run-flat tires that have operated in a run-flat condition can experience extensive internal damage when operated with very low or no tire pressure.

Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP RFT

Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP RFT run-flat tires that have a puncture discovered before a run-flat event (defined as running with 15 psi or less remaining tire pressure) can be repaired following Rubber Manufacturers Association guidelines after a thorough inspection confirms there is no damage to the tire caused from operating in a run-flat condition.

Selected Rubber Manufacturers Association guidelines include:

The tire has more than 2/32-inch of remaining tread depth.

Repairable area is within the tire's tread face (not shoulders or sidewalls).

Tire is removed from the wheel for inspection to confirm no internal damage.
The inspection must not reveal any separations, loose cords, damaged beads or other non-repairable injuries.

A puncture that is a maximum of 1/4-inch (6mm) in diameter with no exposed steel or fabric cords; and a maximum of two punctures per tire that must be separated by at least 16-inches.

The objective of a puncture repair is to seal the tire against loss of inflation pressure and prevent damage to the carcass from the presence of moisture. The repair must seal the tire's innerliner and fill the injury (may require a combination patch/plug).

Yokohama AVS Sport Run Flat

Because Yokohama cannot control the quality of the tire inspection and/or repair, they have chosen not to permit repair of AVS Sport Run Flat tires at this time.

I've heard that the latest generation Goodyear EMTs are much improved over the previous generation. Is this true or just wishful thinking?
