Moving in 10 days, need advice quick!!!
I'm going to be moving to Austin, Tx. in about a week and I'm trying to do this as cost effectively as possible. My initial thought was to rent a truck and trailer the Vette....cost $1100. My next idea was to drive the Vette and rent a much smaller truck.....cost down to $624. My guy had an idea tonight that we should put a trailer hitch on the Vette and rent a trailer.....my thought.... :nono: . I have an idea that I only need something the size of a cargo van, but I don't know of who would rent one and allow me to take it across state lines to Texas.
Does anyone know who might rent cargo vans? If so who and where are they?
Also, does anyone know if Enterprise or someone like that would rent a van/Suburban/whatever and do something like this?
Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can save a little more money on this move? I wont be starting my new job right away and don't want the move to suck up all of my savings. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Don't trailer your stuff with your Vette please whatever you do. :nonod:
What is hard is we can't tell exactly how much stuff you have. If you have time but no money, rent a truck, drive it to Austin with bulk of your stuff, fly back and drive the car.
Drive Vette with valuables to Austin. Have your guy follow in a rental, he flies back.
I moved once using a 72coupe and took out the passenger seat and just filled it full of stuff. Shipped the seat with the rest of my furniture later. :D
Have fun. You will like it in Austin.

Enterprise from my understanding only rents to Businesses. I agree with Doug! Rent the truck and fly back to get the vette..

I rented a uhaul truck and flatbed trailer for ~625 including insurance on the contents of the truck, and my vette on the trailer. I would imagine Uhaul, penske, ryder, or one of the other companies would have something that would fit your needs. I moved from NW Arkansas to Lubbock TX, it's right around 700 miles. Unpacked the truck and dropped it off at the local uhaul dealer.
I was able to squeeze 5 rooms (bedroom, den, living room, kitchen, and bathroom) into their medium size van. Next time I move I'm going to get the next larger size, just for convenience, couldn't afford it this time. Also, I booked the van and trailer almost 2 months ahead of time, the agent said that saved me a TON of money. Good luck with your move.

I recall a friend of mine renting a small Uhaul truck for his stuff, and a Uhaul trailer he towed his Nissan Maxima on. If that works, make sure you cover up the Vette! Good luck with your move, there're a lot of cool Vette people to hook up with here in Texas!

What ever you do, DON"T RENT FROM U-HAUL.
They are going broke and so is all of the equipment. I see them getting towed daily out here now.
Go for the rental truck and car hauler trailer.
But if you really want to save some money, Don't move. You know that no one will welcome you like the ACE bunch.

As for my moving delima....I've decided to just sell all of the furniture that I have since I don't need any of it when I get there, pack as much of the rest of my crap in the Vette as possible and then ship the rest of my boxes UPS. I don't have that much to ship so it shouldn't cost very much....about $20/box. Thanks for all of the suggestions guys!!

Re: Moving in 10 days, need advice quick!!! (Future MD)
If everything goes as planned, I'll be moving to Red River New Mexico within a month. I have looked around and budget has the best price for a cargo truck and a trailer, just under $700 and the move is almost the same distance as yours. Uhaul was just over $1000 for the same size truck and trailer. Good thing about budget is that I would have the truck for 4 days. So you might want to check them out. If you have the truck for several days you can take your furniture to Austin and then drive back, drop off the truck and drive the vette back to Austin.......just an idea.

Welcome to Texas! Houston is only a couple of hours away from Austin, one if you're traveling by Vette. If ya'll wanta get away sometime, theres alot of cool stuff that goes on around here as well (Vette wise). The temperature's a little bit cooler than Az, but the humidity is what will kill ya! :auto:

Welcome Rena! I was in the Hill Country northwest of Austin last weekend. You picked a pretty part of Texas, and that should help you with the transition from the green part of Arizona!

I was born in Austin and lived there until 3 years ago. While I miss the town and the area, I do not miss the traffic. Austin has a great live music scene. What side of town are you going to live on? If you get a chance, there are some beautiful roads to cruise outside of town around Wimberley, TX. The road between Wimberley and Blanco takes you through the devil's backbone :reddevil and it is well worth the drive. Once you get settled, let me know once you start exploring and I can give you some cool places to check out. I can also point you to some great places to eat and hang out.

Don't be shy about negotiating with the truck rental companies on the rate. I rented a truck several years ago to move some stuff about 200 miles. The first quote I got was pretty high.
But once they got the drift that I was comparing prices, the prices started dropping. When I picked up the truck I struck the best deal on, the guy who filled out the paperwork was amazed at the low price I had gotten. But he honored it.
Good luck on the move. I hate moving.

Thanks to all of you for all of the wonderful suggestions. Most people I know out here say that Texans are snobs, but I've received nothing but warm welcomes and well wishes from all of you......thanks for proving all of them wrong.....and I can't wait to be a TEXAN!!! :hurray:
As for all of you Houston folks.....I'm sure that I will end up down there eventually. I've never been and would like to check it out sometime. A vette event would be a good reason to come down. Also, my man's parents live down there and he's originally from there, so I bet we will end up there sometime. I'll look you guys up.
