Welcome to Houston!

You should consider a short term rental until you determine your needs. The last thing you will want is any location out Hwy 290- it was already terrible and now is under a multi-year re-construction project = AGONY. Depending on the time of day a commute via toll roads is not too bad but your monthly toll bill will be expensive.

You will want to locate near the closest major thoroughfare to your work. If I-10 and you want suburban life - Katy which is a 30 -45 minute commute to the near west side. There is newer apartment construction in the energy corridor on I-10 between near the West Sam Houston Tollway but the cost may not be within your budget. You can find older less expensive housing near downtown but you have to be selective about the area.

Another important consideration is what you like to do in your spare time. There is a lot going on in Houston on the weekends but mostly downtown - the location of the better restaurants, museums, entertainment venues, etc.

There is also a lot to do for Corvette owners in Houston with several Corvette clubs - San Jacinto Corvette Club has a good group of people http://www.sanjacintocorvetteclub.org/ which holds show & shines, autocross and track days. My favorite is the road courses - Houston, College Station and Austin which hold regular HPDE's & club racing.

I paid quite a bit less one intersection down when I moved here (west and bw8); however, my truck wheels were indeed stolen there

Hard to move here, so many areas all considered houston! No kids then no way I would look at the woodlands or katy. High dollar for the school systems and the commute is terrible (I live in Katy, work in Galleria).

I'd look for a realtor that does rentals. You'll want west side of Houston. Inside the loop (I-610) would be awesome if you're single but probably not in that price range. Should have some options between the loop and beltway 8.

Homes here in good areas are selling in a day to week. Drives rents up also.

Good Luck!

Just took a year long temp assignment in Houston at my company's new campus in Spring. Found a one bedroom with garage in the lower Woodlands area (Sawdust Road) for around $1100 a month. Places are renting/selling FAST around here due in part to all the relocations to the new campus.

Hell yeah it is. I was helping a friend look for something a few months ago and everything bigger than 850sqft cost more than my mortgage. I think demand is just really high right now.

Well, I'm on my way down there tomorrow, 7/8 to do some hunting.

Some of the places I'm looking at are:

"Village at the Woods" 11800 Grant rd in Cypress 77429
"Cypress Ridge" 2331 Bammelwood Dr 77014
"London Park" 14545 Bammel N Houston rd 77014
"Holly View" 5555 Hollyview dr 77091
"Wyndhan Park" 905 Cypress Station dr 77090
"La Esencia" 300 North Vista Dr 77073
"The Palms" at Cypress Station" 990 Cypress Station dr 77090

I'll be working in the 77024 zip, so most of these seem like a bit of a commute, but it looks like you got to get out a bit to hit my budget. These are just some of the things I found online from 800 miles away.

The area west of 45 to Veteran's Memorial is one of the worst areas in Houston. The only good one on that list is the one on Grant Rd.

Check out this one. It's in town so you'd be going against traffic, and electric is included. I lived here for a while when I was in school:

I found a place yesterday. On hwy 6 just south of 290. very nice community, well kept neighborhood, good price. A little small but still nice and modern. Even on bad day, this leaves the commute bareable. Love the highway system down here, reminds me of nascar at Bristol. lol

Thanks to all for your help, it was valuable in leading me to the right area. You guys are right, there are some tough areas in this town. Several that I was on my way, took one look at my surroundings and quickly turned around. What's weird is that you can see graffiti on a wall, then drive two blocks and see a $500,000 house.

Good deal. I'm still debating on bringing my Z to Houston with me. Only thing that stops me is all of my tools and stuff are back in Florida lol.

Hey! You never offered ME a steak. Lol! 77429 is a nice balance between cost and accessibility. That's where I am. The 290 project will slow you down short term, but when finished will really be a boon to those in this area. The new stretch of 99 between I-10 and 290 is hella fun and my primary source of high-speed shenanigans. Take a good look at the Cypress area. EDIT: I see you landed near Copperfield. That's not too far from me. Let me know if you need some "orientation".

Sorry about that, my bad. Well, once I get my Vet a new wheel, then we should definitely meet up - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...k-of-wood.html

Yeah, I drove up there and saw that it was exactly the type of neighborhood I was looking for. What I also really like is that my work is right off I-10 and the beltway 8. Being a restaurant manager, much of my driving will be off hours. The little jaunt down hw6 to I10 so far looks pretty decent, and really, I can avoid I 10 all together.

I move down there on the 28th. My next post in this section will probably be about where to find good help with my Vette. At 18 years old, and 160K it needs some stuff. I like to do the work myself, but I'm not getting kicked out of my apartment for it. But, I'll get that all sorted out soon I'm sure. The southern end of 6 seems to offer a plethera of shops, but which one is good remains to be seen. If only there was a do it yourself place like I have here in KC.

There is a DIY shop that opened recently. It is off of Westhiemer, probably about a 30 minute or so from where you live. Here is some more information:

I live up into the Tomball area, but I work just off of FM529, very near the Copperfield area. If you ever need a hand just let me know.

I may take you up on that one of these days, and of course, I'm always willing to help turn a wrench as well.

What restaurant are you at,that's why I recommended 290. I'm in the same business and all my travels are during off hours, going in around 10am,and getting off around 10pm. Good luck, and there are plenty of people here to help. L8R ZFLASH

I lived here for a few year - http://www.boardwalkliving.com/The-W...apartments.asp It was a great place, but hard to get in because it is always so full. I lived in building #5 and loved every day I was there, very convenient. I had to move due to work...
