Default Road trip to Santa Fe in a couple weeks....nice drives in the area?

All,

The wife and I are going to Santa Fe (first time) on the 10th for a week. From what I've read it appears that the high road to Taos and the enchanted circle are good drives. Any others (day trips only) that I should put on my list?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Yes, do both drives!

Also, you may wish to try this drive which we frequently do on the bikes:

Once you get to Angel Fire, this will blend with some of your other routes. Also, when you head up from Mora to Angel Fire, a stretch of that road is a single lane track which is a beautiful drive but be careful there and watch for fast moving, Mini Coopers coming the other way!

Another nice ride is:

This takes you past the Valles Caldera which is, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, one of the more breathtaking scenes in the area.

If you take the road all the way through to the 550 and then loop back around to return to Santa Fe, take it easy in the Pueblos if you don't want to get pulled over.

The ski basin road is pretty nice, too:

Along the way is 10,000 waves which is WELL worth the stop. Even well worth a night or two stay.

The only really crazy thing to watch for on these roads is that on occasion, you can encounter some rough pavement as these are all out-of-the-way locations. Generally speaking, however, the last times I did these drives, they seemed like they were just fine.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Also, if by some chance you end up heading toward Phoenix, consider taking the Devil's Highway from Springerville, AZ to Clifton/Morenci, AZ. That's a gorgeous ride as well.

In fact, when we do that tour, this is the route we generally take:

I left this in the middle of nowhere, NM because it gives some options on the return trip, all of which are lovely.

If you head up toward Magdalena, you'll come across the Very Large Array radio telescope which is cool if you're into that kind of thing. I'm a nerd for that place and go there whenever I'm in the area!

Excellent, thanks Wag. Thanks for spending the time to respond.

The wife and I absolutely enjoy roadtrips in the Vette. As I always say, if you've got it you might as well drive it!

Absolutely!

I love New Mexico and Arizona. Great place to live and to do some touring. And if you're tired of either, Colorado and Utah are just a quick day ride away.
