ATX: Anyone into fence building?
Need a new fence around the house. need about 30 panels and a gate replaced. Looking at using metal poles this time. Anyone in the business or recommend anyone?

I built mine. All 575 feet of it. Got some quotes around $9-$10k. After it was all said and done, I did it for 1/2 of that. Metal poles with about 2/3 bag cement per, 4" cedar planks individually screwed into the 2x2s of which 3 are inbetween the poles. Metal brackets holding up the 2x2s. Took more than a weekend but I had time. Oh, and bought the $100 auger at Lowes too.
Even built the double door gate. Doesn't look professional, but doesn't look like a pair of monkeys did it either. I'm happy with it.
Fast forward to a few months later and mother nature threw some 60mph winds at it and I lost some of my work. Luckily insurance helped rebuild it that time.
So, if you have time, give it a shot.

Get a bid from a Pro fence Co. Make sure you get cedar slats and stringers, metal poles and all galvanized hardware.
Don't accept treated lumber and common steel hardware and nails.

Not a fun DIY. You and a helper working full time to install 300' of fence? Going to take at least a day to remove the old fence and rent a truck/trailer to haul it off (Dump fee?). Another day to load and unload the new fence materials, another 2 days minimum to install the new fence in nearly 100° temps.
Your time and any helpers time versus a Pro crew with the tools and experience? Your cost at retail for parts and supplies versus a fence companies cost for supplies?
Make sure you get Cedar boards and stringers w/galvanized hardware, I doubt the $30 8' sections you quoted are Cedar, probably treated pine that will warp and twist.
The last fence I had full control over was a few years ago and was 120' of 2 thru Cedar 1X6X6 @ $12 a foot + $250 for removing the old fence. Add $352 for a 10' double gate and a $65 for a 36" walk gate and I was at $2,000. a 2 man crew did it all in one day.

i may just reinforce some of the 4x4 posts. they aren't rotting, just whoever put the fence up the first time 20 years ago did a shatty job pouring the post foundations. the fence is pulling itself out of the ground.

Probably just the wonderfull clay soil expanding and contracting. Once the rains start (if ever) the posts will move again.

Mark; since you use top quality for your car you should buy the top quality fence pickets. 7/8" X 6" X 6' Clear Cedar are only $2.59 each. That's $43.96 just for pickets for an 8' section.
