Well, now that you all hate me because I am an import lover (I have owned a Chevy before!), help me if you could? I'm on here because my father has a 91 Corvette. He knows very little about the car and has given me the duty of getting it fixed. He tells me the car has been dyno'd (not by him, I'm not even sure he really knows what a dyno is) at 410 hp. He said 10 hp comes from some air intake filter and 25 hp comes from a chip in the system. If that were true, his engine would be 375 hp stock. Which means his car could kick my car's arse on a straight away. But I researched the engines and there are two that were made during 91 for his 'vette. One had 245 hp stock and the other the 375 stock. If its the 245 hp engine, I'll smoke him! How can I tell the difference? Can't hold my head up high if my moded car doesn't out perform his stock car! LOL
Well, the 375 would be a ZR-1. An easy way to tell would be to look at the intake manifold...if there are 8 pairs of runners, its the ZR-1. If there are 4 pairs, like this its the slower L98.
Alright, I'm game....I have done very little work on cars other than minor body work. I drive them, understand how they work but always send it to a trusted shop to be worked on (too much of a headache, I have no patience). Tell me, if you would be so kind, what the runners are and where the manifold is so I can find afore mentioned runners. Its fun learning a different car!
Ask him if it's a ZR-1 - surely the guy would know if he's a got a ZR-1 over a regular vette. The ZR-1 cost double what a regular vette sold for new and they still command quite a premium.
This is what an older ZR-1 (LT5) engine looks like:
See the differences? There are eight runners per side on the LT5 vs. four on the L98. The LT5 was designed and built by Mercury Marine. Quad cams, four valves per cylinder... the most radical engine to be placed into a Corvette from the factory at it's time of release.
It was replaced by the LS series engines in the next generation Corvette which went 'back to basics' with a single cam and dual valves per cylinder.
Although the ZR1 was extremely quick (0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, and onto 180+ mph), the huge performance of the LT5 engine was matched by its robustness. As evidence of this, a stock ZR1 set a number of international and world records at a test track in Fort Stockton, Texas on March 1, 1990, which was verified by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), including:
7 New International Records:
* 100 Miles @ 175.600 mph;
* 500 Miles @ 175.503 mph;
* 1000 Miles @ 174.428 mph;
* 5000 km @ 175.710 mph;
* 5000 Miles @ 173.791 mph;
* 12 Hours Endurance @ 175.523 mph;
* 24 Hours Endurance @ 175.885 mph for 4,221.256 Miles
3 WORLD RECORDS - IRRESPECTIVE of CATEGORY or CLASS:
* 5000 km @ 175.710 mph;
* 5000 Miles @ 173.791 mph;
* 4,221.256 Miles @ 175.885 mph
These records remain unbeaten today by any subsequent Corvette, including both the C5 and C6 Z06s.
From what you said, it sounds like he has the ZR-1.
...and yes, you will most likely get smoked. It's pretty bad ass, even by today's standards.
He wouldn't know, he thought he had a C5, was very adamant about it until I showed him proof online.
Let me get this straight.. He ownes a 91 vette and thinks its a c5? He does not know if it is a ZR1 or not? Is he sure its even a 91 year model? Did he know what he was buying when he purchased the car? Also cars are dynoed measuring rwhp. (rear wheel horsepower). So assuming he had the zr1. 410 rwhp is way off.. Assuming those 2 mods, the dyno results should be right around 350 hp
My dad knows nothing about cars. I told him I could save him tons of money if we got the parts ourselves and paid a mechanic to do it (I have a friend who could do some of it),or at least research the parts ourselves so we don't get ripped off but he said he just wanted to take it in and pay to have it fixed. And its not that my father has a bad memory either, he remembers an amazing volume of stuff. I know what he said was true. He was told about the dyno and the 410 hp, but that doesn't mean he ever checked it, you know? So I'm flying totally blind here! LOL
Thanks for the pics of the engines, I'm going to go use that in a minute (at their house dog sitting while they are in Vegas).

ok, he got lied to! The engine looked like the first pic (and yes, it was a '91, I checked the title!), so there is no way it has 410 hp. Whew! I can still talk crap! Thanks all....
They just got back from Vegas and I told my father that his engine was the 245 hp engine and he flipped! Absolutely refuses to believe that that is all his car has. So now he's mad at me, lol.

I still can't understand why neither of you had any knowledge of the Corvette you had in the garage.....
I have a friend that told me his 2002 WS6 T/A had well over 400 Crank HP (~320 stock). He said he added inatke, mufflers, and a chip. He said if he added up all the claims by the manufacturer of the parts he was well over 400 Crank. I just laughed and said that I must be around 700 HP or so by now if I added up the MFG claims on all the parts I added to my car.... It just does not work that way.
Tell your Dad to upgrade to a C5, or better yet a C5 Z06 and he will be shocked how faster they are.
dare I say this on here without getting shot? I'm not really a corvette fan. I love the stingray body style, but other body styles just don't do it for me. Since my father has had the 'vette (about 6 years now), I've driven it once. I understand there is more than looks, but until I get to really see how it handles, thats all I can go off of! I've been nagging him to let me autocross it, I've seen other 'vette drivers on different courses, would be fun I think...but I doubt it'll ever happen.
And it should tell you something that I'm the one on here looking things up about the 'vette. He wanted one as a kid, so he bought it. Other than that, he could care less about the car. Hardly ever drives it, it sits in his garage most of the time.
If I hadn't become a car fan in the past few years, nothing would get done with that car. I am more knowledgable about cars than he is and all I've really been around is a very select few types of cars. Gotta start somewhere!

until recently, a '04 Subaru STi. Had to sell it so I could afford to live while going to college, lol. I now drive a civic (not riced out!), but the minute I graduate, I'm getting another STi!

Evos are nice cars. I've known Evo owners who have bought STis and loved them more and STi owners who have bought Evos and loved them more. The STi has more giddy-up stock and better brakes. But the Evo has better handling. Either way, I'd be spending money on it to make it "equal" to the other. So what it comes down to for me, is looks. I much prefer the look of a STi ('02-'08) vs an Evo. As far as a Malibu, I just don't like the way they look! I know with the V6, its got some hp, but how about the handling?

Just curious as to what motivates you. Neither of those cars by any means are real dragsters but they will ralley quite well, I'm not a big fan of the STi's myself, they look nice but just not my cup of tea. Imo save up for a Z06 or an SS Camaro if your looking to drop 34K into a 305 HP STi Get more bang for ya buck! And if your looking for handling, which lets be honest unless your really going to track the hell out of it there is really no need for superior handling, Z06 is whatcha want if you want handling, its all about taste tho!
