GrandSport Speedway in Hitchcock Great Local Place to Run Some Hot Laps!!!
Houston area Corvettes come join in the fun at GSS. Check out their website with calendar of events. I drove this past weekend and plan to attend next event. Driving your Corvette on a roadcourse is the most fun you can have with your clothes on
I am not involved with this business, just an avid Corvette enthusiast trying to do my part in promoting this hobby which I love. I know that Houston and the surrounding areas are full of drag race enthusiasts but not so many closed course enthusiasts. This is not like autocross where events are timed, you are instructed on driving skills and tought to drive safely with situational awareness which can be a huge asset when you are on city streets. The track at GrandSport Speedway is extremely fresh & smooth so it will not have any surprise bumps, potholes or harsh transitions to unsettle your car. The run-off area outside the track is very wide so off track excursions are not likely to harm you or your car.
IMHO, I believe there are many Corvette enthusiasts that are unaware that this facility & opportunity exists and how much fun it is. At Texas World Speedway in College Station roadcourse events sponsored by "The Drivers Edge" consistantly fill to capacity all 120 slots. I intend to go there next Here at GSS I have never seen over 18 participants total. I have only been three times but every time has been great without pressure to be the fastest around the track. Just go & drive your speed in the class that best suits your skill level. Hope to see you there
**BTW, I hope to post a video of my track day as soon as I can download and edit it to post on YouTube.
Location: San Antonio Texas / Kansas City Hook'em Horns
There are quite a few peeps here on the forum that go out there.
Back40 lives across the frigging street. Lucky guy. BaBaBlackgoat does the Groove union a lot. I haven't had the chance to do it myself yet but the time is coming.
I've run there several times. Great track..seen very few Corvettes out for the fun...ran once with San Jacinto Corvette Club, which was an outstanding outing. I encourage any Houston area Corvettes to come give it a try. Around $200 per day, with five 20 minute sessions. They normally have a track day once or twice a month. Met Back40 on the SanJac day. Ran last Sunday, with four Corvettes and a Mustang GT. NemisisC5 was "lightning fast".

My Man "Ro", good to see you here. I just edited my in car video from our last session. Sorry but I spelled your name Row in the vid
You'll like the video, the sound is not good because of all the wind hitting the microphone on my $99 camera but the HD 720P resolution is not bad. Next time I will tape some foam over the mic to help keep the wind noise down. Looking forward to seeing you & Manny again. Watch this thread for the vid
San Jacinto Corvette Club has hosted numerous events and open track days at Grand Sport. We have a open track day scheduled there on Friday, April 3, and autocrosses on April 4th and 5th. We are also hosting an autocross at the Houston Police Academy on March 22. I've attached flyers for both events. Maybe now that more are going to the track I can start getting off my soap box

Bernyce and I will be there in April. Some of the Okies said there coming down to. Pretty cool that last years last race was there and now the first one is there.
Glad you and the lovely "Ms B." will be coming down, I'll order extra "Silver Bullets." Hope you enjoyed last year's Saturday night, we have a great evening planned for this year's party that will set a new bar. Planning on seeing you at Awards, we're skipping Expo and going to MSR Cresson... hum... race or wax?

I've been telling people this for some time, unfortunately most Vette drivers just drive around and look pretty. Some are intimidated, which they should'nt be, others are scared something might happen to their car. Well I think as long as you don't act like an idiot, you have less chance of damaging your car there than in Houston traffic.
Everyone there is more than willing to give pointers or even ride with noobs so as to help anybody out that wants help or advice.
If your in a need for adrenaline, this is the place to get it. Also, the first weekend of April, we will have our 69th second Semi-annual Throw Down at the Back 40.
Ya'll come now, ya hear?!

Ran there last November. First time since the re-paving and had a blast. I will be there in April. Will probably bring a GS. The track is very well laid out, fast, and smooth. Look forward to seeing lots of new faces there.
This is some in car video filmed 2-8-09 at GrandSport Speedway located at a WWII blimp base in Hitchcock, Texas. In June 2008 I attended Spring Mountain Driving School as a feeler to gauge my interest in driving HPDE's. I purchased a 2002 ZO6 in August 2008 and added a few mods to keep it running cool and for safety. Since I've owned the car I have driven a total of eleven 20 minute sessions including the one below, it would have been more but I had to deal with a few mechanical/electrical gremlins. I have been off the track a few times on my last two track days, thankfully without drama or damage. I love my new hobby and just wanted to share this short video with everbody here
Ran there a few times last year, but i need some tires before I can go again. I ate the fronts there last fall since i was understeering so much. I need to adjust my entry speed
I like the close proximity of the track, but they have been promising a clubhouse for so long I wonder if they will even have one in 2009...

They definetely need the clubhouse I believe if more people would start going they would build it sooner....I dunno, what came first, the chicken or the egg
Wife and I made it there today, by total accident.
We went by lakes of Danbury to see where we could go fishing a couple of times a year and headed back up FM 2004. As I go by the blimp base a few times a year, but always in a company truck, I never gave it much thought to check it out. Well today, we were in the Vette and I remembered the track was located near the blimp base and decided to at least see if we could view the track.
There were a couple of ricers running while we drove in. A nice young man named Jason introduced himself and we started talking. As of this point in life, all of my racing has been done in a straight line, about a quarter of a mile in length.
Jason is an instructor here and volunteered to take me around the track a couple of times just to see what this is all about. Well, at the end of the 5 minutes, it is all about FUN! We made 3 laps, took it easy on the first, pushed a little on the second, then pushed pretty hard on the last. He told me the car had a lot more in her. I don't paddle shift at the 1/4 mile, but on this one, I would paddle shift. Plus it was a freebie (actually I think he wanted to take Vette around the track, so we both benefited). While I was there an Aston Martin pulled up and another white Vette also pulled up.
My car is a non Z-51 A6 Coupe, which is not really set up for this type of racing, but still, the rush was fantastic.
I plan to go back one day and do my own driving.
One question, having an A6, do any of you think I should get a transmission cooler, or is a bone stock car OK to run?

A cooler is definetely reccomended
I was there today as well but left early after my tires started showing some cords. It was time to replace but I thought I could get another day out of them (new ones on the way now)...got a half day at least
Jason is a super guy, very helpful & skilled. Glad you made it out but sorry I missed you. The track was wet in sections to start the day but most of it was dry by my 4th session
