Default What are some of your fav hillcountry drives?

My wife, and I are talking about heading to Austin or San Antonio in a few weeks, and then spending a day driving through the hillcountry. Not neccessarily looking for difficult driving roads ( But I don't mind it either ).. Just looking for some good scenary, maybe some neat places to stop and check out.

Tell me some stretches of road you like to drive, and whats good to see on em, or if they are just full of fun twisties.

Thanks

Larry

The back roads west of kerville are all fun. Pick any one, and great scenery. I also like the lake travis area near austin. Any roads around the hill country are a lot of fun. There is also the Devil's Backbone between San Marcos and Blanco.

The kerrville and utopia areas have some nice drives, very nice scenery.
And because a picture's worth a thousand words, here are some scenery pics from our San Antonio/Utopia Brunch & Cruise.

We ate brunch at Lost Maples Cafe

These next pics are from the recent S.A./Kerrville Cruise:

And this one was taken on a rained out Kerrville Pre-Cruise Cruise:

We spent the weekend at a bed and breakfast outside of Blanco and the whole area is nice driving ,its in-between Austin and San Antiono , we had a great time and it makes me want to buy some land in that area. Peaceful and beautiful. We were not in the vette , but her car is fun to drive as well ....

I can only echo what everyone else has said, except that if you do the Lake Travis thing, have lunch or dinner/drinks at the Oasis. The view of the lake is breath taking. It's like 450 feet off the water. Carlos & Charlies is always fun too.

We always do the Willow City Loop during our annual Bluebonet Cruise.

North of Johnson City, take 1323 west from 281, follow it to Willow City. The loop goes around to 16.

I also love the park road that connects Bastrop State Park and Beuscher State Park, east of Austin....no in the Hill country, but it is a pretty drive.

Our Club will be doing its annual Vick Livingston Memorial Bluebonnet Cruise on April 29th and 30th. We'll be leaving Ft. Worth via Hwy 377 and then travel the following over the two days: Hwy 16, Hwy 71, Hwy 281, Hwy 1323, Willow City Loop, Hwy 290, Hwy 1376, Hwy 1888, Hwy 306, Hwy 21, Hwy 71, Hwy 95, Hwy 36, Hwy 317, Hwy 56, and Hwy 51. Of course most of these roads are not really highways but rather FM roads but it makes it simplier to call them highways. In all total it will be around 700 or so miles and only a handful, about 15 or so, are on an interstate highway as we leave New Braunfels Sunday morning, the other 99.9% are all on great Texas back roads. There may not be as many wildflowers to see this year as in the past but we'll have a blast anyway.
