Default CHP got new toys?

Does the CHP have new "plain clothes" cars?

We all know about the white Camaros, right? but...

yesterday NB Hwy 65 between Roseville and Rocklin (a favorite CHP speed hangout, they pick em off at will there!) I passed a Volvo station wagon that had been stopped (I presume for speeding) by a PLAIN dark (think it was metallic) gray Crown Vic, its light bar hidden in the rear window, blue flashing lights in the door mirrors!

The car did have a badges on the door but with the color of the car it was very hard to spot. And if this car were coming up behind you you would have NO chance to know what it was.

ANyone got any hard info about this?

Seems to me the CHP is seriosly flirting with breaking the CA law which clearly states in Vehicle Codes 40804(b) and 40800 that patrol vehicles should be painted a distinctive color. Since when exactly, is GRAY a distinctive color?

40804. (b) Every officer arresting, or participating or assisting in the
arrest of, a person so charged while on duty for the exclusive or
main purpose of enforcing the provisions of Divisions 10 and 11 is
incompetent as a witness if at the time of such arrest he was not
wearing a distinctive uniform, or was using a motor vehicle not
painted the distinctive color
specified by the commissioner.

40800. Every traffic officer on duty for the exclusive or main
purpose of enforcing the provisions of Division 10 or 11 of this code
shall wear a full distinctive uniform, and if the officer while so
on duty uses a motor vehicle, it must be painted a distinctive color
specified by the commissioner.

And there's this one also:

VC 2800.1. (a) Any person who, while operating a motor vehicle and
with the intent to evade, willfully flees or otherwise attempts to
elude a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle, is guilty of a
misdemeanor if all of the following conditions exist:
(1) The peace officer's motor vehicle is exhibiting at least one
lighted red lamp visible from the front and the person either sees or
reasonably should have seen the lamp.
(2) The peace officer's motor vehicle is sounding a siren as may
be reasonably necessary.
(3) The peace officer's motor vehicle is distinctively marked.

First time I've seen one though! - this kind of sneakiness really annoys me, I think the best form of discouraging speeding is to be VERY open about enforcement; this kind of thing is not about prevention it is about catching people unawares (to collect $$$?) and in IMNSHO shouldn't be legal... see quotes above - this is clearly not OK per the spirit of the CA law although maybe per the letter of the law. Cop cars should be distinctively marked, that is what the law says, and so one that you cannot tell apart from any other (by obvious intention) sure doesn't meet that criterion, in my book.

It would be very interesting to know if anyone has ever tried this for a defense!
