How strict is Carlsbad, battery tie down etc.
I finally got the 454 in my 69 running well and would like to drag race for the first time, been a big fan forever, but have never done it. I am going to run it on street tires to keep the times down, the car is stock as far as racing rules go. What do I need need to do before I come down. I would hate to make the drive from Huntington Beach only to get told I can't run. I am hoping to run in the high 11's on the steet tires.
The motor is a solid roller cammed 454 that should make in the neighbor hood of 575-600 HP. I will find out at the So. Cal. dyno day on July 13.
The Tranny is a Richmond 6 speed, with stock bell housing.
Thanks for the info :chevy

69 N.O.X. , It would be my hope that you would only run your car if in fact that it was actually ready to run the 1/4 mile. Be sure that all of the mechanicals are in working order and ready to feel and survive the hardest take off known to man in a car... Good luck with your track times!! :)

I have only been to Carlsbad twice, once last year and once about 4 years ago. Neither time did anyone look under my hood. Of course the faster you go the closer they look. Maybe some of the drag racers know but once you start running in the 11's I think you need some sort of a bar or better harnesses, but I could be wrong.
I agree with vetterdstr though, tech inspection is there for YOUR safety and shouldn't be viewed as something to "get around". If you're worried about the details just call the raceway and ask what's required for the (estimated) times you think you'll be running.
From what I remember the items of interest are: catch tanks on any fluid that might overflow, metal battery hold-down, safe/legal tires, and a helmet.....at minimum.
I think you also need a parachute if your car breaks 150 mph through the traps. :D

I did not mean to give the impression I was trying to get around the rules, more looking for guidance on what I need to do before I come down. :chevy

I don't remember any real tech, but if you go to fast with out a roll bar, you are gone. They never did open my hood or look at my helment. Yes you must wear one!

N.O.X.
If you are who I think you are
I met you at the Donut shop in HB about a month ago. I have a red 78 with a Richmond and my wife has a very nice red 72.
Carlsbad's tech is "CHEEZY" at best. Bring a helmet and have fun.
If you run in the 11's you will need a roll bar. On street tires it will be a task but ya never know. I would think you ride is very capable of it.
I plan on getting my car back togather and going down.
GP........786speed.................

GROSSPOLLUTER:
Ya its me, I know 11's on street tires will be tough. I have been practicing launching the car and it is futile at anything over 2000 rpms. I will have to walk it out of the hole and then get on it. I get the car dyno'd next weekend then to the track I will go.

I'd be happy with a 12.0 @12(something) on street tires. Sounds like a good time to me :D :D :D
I have to get to work  :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:

Hey 69 N.O.X., check your email. I copied up and put together a short version of general NHRA rules used at the track. It covers the car requirements. Like others have said, as long as you have good basics and a couple of specifics (depending on how fast you run) you will be fine.

There are going to be several people at Dyno day around your time who would be happy to talk about whats needed. Al will be there and I know his car runs low 12s (at times).
Other than normal stuff, like helmet, with your car I would recommend a drive line loop for your safety.
