The LA Sheriffs are getting funded to patrol the 101 between
Calabasas and Westlake Village. Yes, the Sheriffs can write tickets on the freeway just as legally as the CHP.
It sounds as if it will be starting soon however they are already streched real thin with having to assist in the surrounding canyons and PCH is always non stop so hopefully you wont see to many on the freeway. FYI most of them look for guys doing 64 in the fast lane or people doing 85 plus.

ARE YOU PAYING ATTN TO THIS DIRTY HOWIE!!!!!!
The fast lane is too scary and I didn't think my car could go over 85
I think Mulhuland to 23 to Patrero will avoid this problem for me ..... I can always out run you guys in the canyons

I have never seen any officer give someone a ticket for going too slow(64 fast lane). They need to tell those people if someones on your but, let 'em pass! I have two tickets in my past, one for speeding as I went around one of these slowpokes, and one for actually passing on the right. Such CHP BS! It also drives me nuts when these people get in the carpool lanes and put on cruise control at 65Sorry for the rant, I'm just on the freeways all week long.
Consider a speeding ticket a form of an added tax for the state. They need the money, and this is a cheap way to get it.
Actually, this method is by far one of the more expensive methods to supposedly raise revenue. If a cities sole concern was raising revenue they could hire 5 or so parking guys for every bike cop and pocket nearly 100% of the fine.
The state wont make any $ on this one either if (notice I say if) they get charged back for the mandatory 3 hours O.T. for each case that is contested. People contest these all the time because only the CHP can write tickets on the freeway according to 99% of the population.
Dr. Kopel, Decker sounds like an excellent alternative route. Can I bring the Hypermotard?

Sounds like from your post that now we can expect to see a lot more of them on the freeway. Thanks for the heads up.

PCHMOTO Thanks for the 101 lookout!
Jason, you're preaching to the choir. I'm driving down to El Segundo from Conejo Valley 3 to 4 days a week. Can't tell you how many pathetic drivers I see on a daily basis. Going down a hill, better hit the brakes down to 50 MPH... going up a hill, "oh I have to hit the gas peddle to maintain my speed"... people still using their cell phones with no hands-free despite the recent law...slowpokes in the fast lane and could careless about letting passing traffic by. UGH!!!

I too used to have to commute from the Conejo to S. Central so I share your pain with the slow people in the fast lane. I would always see the Roadrunner and the UCLA shuttle vans driving in the car pool lane doing barely over 65 while all the other lanes were moving at a faster pace. Dont forget about the people who have to slam on the brakes when the sun barely peaks out over the Calabasas grade.

ALWAYS fight your tickets. In my experience, you have about a 40% chance the cop doesn't show up and then you win. If the cop shows up, then ask for traffic school or fight the ticket if you have a good defense.
If more people fought their tickets, the whole corrupt revenue raising system of the CHP, cops, insurance companies and courts would come to a grinding halt because the courts would be jammed up and the cops would be spending all their time in court instead of writing tickets.

Too much TV Law here.
And Police, CHP and Sheriffs can write tickets anywhere... the seal at the center of the badges says "California" -- if you're driving like a azzhat, you're gonna get stopped. And if the Officer/Deputy is too far out their county, they can get the local Agency to come by and drop off your paperwork. Don't keep believing the myth that they can't/or won't.

there's a reason why there is no enforcement of laws that would actually reduce traffic jams.
Most traffic jams occur due to faster traffic meeting up with slower traffic and that faster traffic not having an ability to get around slower traffic.
Other states have enacted and enforced such laws which have proven to increase highway safety and decrease traffic.
For instance, in NJ, especially on the thorouhfares that feed NYC area, they have huge signs that states if you are not passing someone, you had better be in the right hand lanes.
So what does this do?
(1) by making the left most lane(s) passing only lanes, cops can get through traffic MUCH MORE SAFELY and with less risk to civilians
(2) cops can identify speeders much more easily, since the right most lanes are much more full, the speeders are pretty much relegated to the left lane
(3) when traffic is light, and speeders decide to push the limit a bit more - the likelihood of an accident-causing traffic jam is much less.
(4) these laws make it VERY CLEAR that those who attempt to enforce speed laws like idiot vigilantes by driving the exact speed limit (or just less) in the fast lane will not be tolerated and will be ticketed - Remember, these people cause more financial and environmental impact than you can possibly imagine by causing traffic jams. These people know very well that most traffic SAFELY travels about 10 MPH above the speed limit.
Just imagine what would happen if our highway system suddenly appears to be more efficient than it really is. Certain pockets within the States public offices will be getting less filled - that is a fact!!
It is also a fact that on a per capita basis, our highway system is much less efficient than those where these laws are posted and enforced.
I would bet money that if the state would post signage and enforce these laws in ONLY those areas where the highway narrows and widens by number of lanes (such as on the 405), we would see a decrease in traffic jams.
However, this would cause a strong uproar amongst quite a few people that would injustly contend that travelling in the left lane is safer for them.
Where else can you go in this country and find the right most lanes travel faster than the left most lanes during high traffic times? - that is an UNDISPUTABLE fact of our current highway system.
Think about this: I can't find it right now, but I read a poll where the majority of LA county respondents that stated they prefer driving in the left lane also would not only move to the next rightmost lane to allow a safe pass, but would actually slow down when someone approaches them from behind.
There are clear reasons why much of the scientific basis for such laws and enforcement is not publicized and most has to deal with money.
Believe it or not, but some groups make alot more money when traffic is a major social concern.
Answer this: who causes more collective harm to our local communities? (a) speeder travelling in left most lane only or (b) person that drives the speed limit in the lane that is relegated for passing and refuses to allow a safe pass?
You can probably answer this best by waiting to think about when you are driving on the 405 or 5 at 5PM tomorrow and notice that everyone in the right lane is moving along faster than every other lane. At the front of every traffic jam is the set of folks making it very difficult for faster traffic to pass them - and they truly believe it is their right to control traffic.
I would dare these idiots attempt to drive that way on the Autobahn - I'd like to see how long they keep their licenses. That is a highway system where such laws are STRICTLY enforced.
I got nailed by CHP on the 101 Topanga area this morning.
Sunday morning 7:45am. Tons of chippies out there writing up tickets.
What pisses me off is that I was more or less "trapped" in a pack of about 15 cars, all doing the same speed or faster.
I was in the #2 lane and was getting smoked by people passing me.
A new, lime green Viper was being chased by a new red ZR-1 with a Rydell tag in the fast lane, going way faster than me.
He wrote 80 mph. I'm fighting it.
