Has anyone brought a new out of state car into California?
I am looking at buying a new 2008 from an out-of-state dealer and bringing it into California. The emissions code is FE9.
Talked with CA DMV twice, they don't seem to know if I can register it.
The dealer does not seem to know for sure. I talked with GM and could not get a satisfactory answer either.
I have heard that out-of-state dealers ship to California with NE1 or FE9 codes all the time.
Does anyone have experience bringing new out-of-state cars into California good or bad.

Correct.
Also must have a emissions sticker stating 50 state emissions and Ca compliant. Check with forum member Bud Miller on this he just went through it. Exceptions are military.

This was correct in 2004 when I bought mine. I had to bring the car here, smog it, then take the smog cert and go get it registered and pay all the taxes, and licensing fees.
Talk to one of the out of state forum new car dealers. They do it all the time. Or did it. Also I think you can do a curtisy(sp) delivery with a local dealer Just expect to pay the local dealer a few hundred for their time.
I bought my 2009 Vert from Reliable Chevrolet in Springfield, MO. The car was shipped from Bowling Green to my local Chevrolet dealer in Southern California. Check the RPO codes on the left side when you open the glove box. Make sure the RPO codes NU5 - EMISSION SYSTEM CALIFORNIA BIN 4 V73 - STATEMENT OF VEHICLE CERT.-U.S. /CANADA YF5 - 50-STATE EMISSIONS. Most all US dealers order their cars with 50 State Emissions and you can bring them to California as a NEW car.
This question comes up every so often. I have bought Two out of state Corvettes. An 06, and a 08. Flew in and picked both up, and drove them home.
Very easy to determine if they comply to Calif. regs. Front right corner of hood is a sticker that states if the car complies to Ca. smog rules. Thats it! Bring it back to Calif, have it smoged, pay the sales tax to DMV, registration fees, and you are good to go. Unreal how hard it's to get an answer to this question if a car meets Calif. regs.

Was your 08 a FE9 code?
All it says on the one I'm looking at (FE9 code) is "Meets Federal Emissions". Nothing about California.

This is true if the car is new, but if it is used it has to have over 7500 miles.

Mine is an 08 ZO6. The sticker under the hood states "conforms to all federal and California EPA" or somethinglike that. As Mike stated, if the California isn't on the sticker on a new one it ain't a Calif. ready car. Looking at the sticker there isn't a "F" code there. As also posted, used cars have to have the 7500 miles. DMV looks under the hood at the sticker that says Calif.
Are you looking under the hood at the sticker?
I hate to break the bad news to you, but you must pass on this car! I had the same problem when I was looking for my Vette.
FE9 IS Federal Emissions, not CA emissions, and not 50 state emissions. I recently purchased a 2008 Coupe, with FE9, from Michigan. It was used, with over 7500 miles, so I was able to register it without any problems. I went to the DMV, paid the taxes and fees, got a temporary window sticker, a smog check, then a visual inspection at the DMV. I walked out with CA plates, tags and the registration! I had the vehicle transported here, and received it after I paid the fees, so I had the temp. sticker, allowing me to drive it. Some states require that the owner return the plates when they sell, so the new buyer must have registration ready to go.
If you are a CA resident, and aquire a new car, it must meet CA smog laws. CA law considers all vehicles with less than 7500 miles to be new when purchased by a CA resident. This holds true whether the car was registered out of state or not. You cannot purchase the car with less than 7500 miles, and drive it around to aquire the mileage. An odometer mileage statement is required from the seller.
There are a few exceptions, like military, divorce, stolen or destroyed vehicle while out of state. Look at www.dmv.ca.gov for more information.
FE9 won't do in CA. I checked with GM, while the vet is mechanically a 50 state car, it needs a sticker that says so. The DMV supervisor said that a letter from the manufacturer stating that this Vet is a 50 state car would work.
The DMV gave me a number to call at GM. I will call Monday.
just did it in Jan..
gotta have the CA sticker, recent smog cert, and pay new car taxes if less than 7500 miles, and here is the other kicker..DMV will have to inspect..some CHP can do it instead...also,go online for the forms you will need..they do a visual..
get all your ducks in a row before you see DMV
good luck................

wondering when you were going to come up out of your hole
I went to AAA and there wasn't really a visual. The did come out and just verify the odometer.
I had the visual done at AAA, they did check the sticker under hood. Depends on AAA probably. Then that paper work goses to DMV. Keeps you from waiting for DMV to do the check. AAA can't register the car after check. Paper work has to be done at DMV

Monts,
Calling GM won't do anything, but confirm your problem. They won't certify the car for CA, even if you paid to have the modifications done to make it CA legal. My understanding is the only difference between the FE9 and CA emissions (YF5 ?) is a charcoal canister to absorb the fuel tank vapors. This must be factory installed, to legally be a 50 state vehicle. The only way you can register this vehicle here is with a shady inspection, where they don't check the sticker under the hood. But if they did check it, you are screwed. I think its a bit odd that you can bring this same car into CA once it has 7500 miles or more! My opinion is to make all vehicles sold in the USA 50 state legal!
