Default Changing out my thermostat

The thermostat on my 2008 LS3 is stamped 86 degrees C which is 186.8 degrees F. It's fully opened at when the cooling temperature reaches 200 degrees F.

Has anyone install a 160 which would mean it should be fully opened at around 174 degrees. I could program my fan to come on sooner as well. Are there any problems doing this i.e. condensing moisture in exhaust, etc.

Shouldnt be any problems. I did same mod and saw no problem. Little moisture in exhaust as usual, nothing problematic.

Here we go again
Ask yourself these questions;
What is combustion efficiency?
What is thermal conductivity with different metals?
How do those two questions above relate?
What happens when you do short trips over a few years of operation?
How does cooler oil temp affect net HP with thicker oil?
Turning fans on sooner, great if fans require no energy to run?
Without changing radiator size do you really think your doing anything of significance?
Does the floor manager of Wal-mart or Macy’s know more than GM Engineering?
And how do we get through the day?

Use the super performance 163 not the 160.

Let me rephrase, "Not Advisable"

Now which will he remember, just trying to save his motor or who ever buys it from him later on. It's called cylinder wash down caused by short duration trips resulting in improper heated engine leaving excess unburned fuel. This causes next restart on oil free or dry cylinder wall resulting in scored cylinder walls with time. You might ask the question why are all thermostats closed when cold?

Get a good thermo, set the fans and have a nice day....you will be fine.

Topgunn-Not all here are tactless or insensitive of others questions or input.....of course this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Looks to me like people are trying to save him from wasting his money. There is nothing tactless or insensitive about that.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here. But I know some of these "great" people. Their good guys, and will share their knowlegdge when asked for it (and they have a lot of knowledge). But when the thermostat issue has come up I could see the blood pressure rising. So to the OP don't take the tone of the posts personally. This subject has been cleary discussed at length and is a sensitive topic.

While I agree that getting a thermostat at a lower temperature sounds like a good idea. I think it may be a fad mod and I wonder if it has any significant performance advantage. I know that my stock LS1 has no cooling issues and stays at 190 degrees while the car is moving, at any speed or condition. When I am waiting in traffic the temp goes to up to 210. I see nothing wrong with the stock system.

Looking at Jimman's profile;

Biography:
PHD in Solid State and Applied Physics. Hold patent for Thermal Dynamics with Peltier devises involving thermal conductivity.

I think his opinion warrants some consideration.

Jimman, hope you don't mind posting from your profile.

Thank you for your response. It made the most sense. I orgainally spent the weekend installing a 180 degree thermostat because most dealers just call it a 190 deegree stock when in fact it's not. Close but not accurate. So I put in a 180 but it never did work correctly every after setting my fan to come on 15degrees sooner. And quite honestly for a 8.6 degree F differential I saw no benefit. The only one I was able to find was a 160that was the reason for my question.

I like a shared exchanged of knowledge rather than just bashing someone without ever going into a though process of their logic. Thank you, you actually are logical.

Best regards,

gary
