Wow, yesterday was another great day on the track! Cool but not cold also a little windy but it could have been worse. It was great meet Oli, Jeff and Robin. And always good to hang with Allan and Joe.
All I can say about Oli is ..... da*n dude, you're fast around the track. I was very impressed. I found myself bragging to my rider about you as if we'd been friends for years as you blew by me going up the hill to the carousel.
Sorry Jeff had problems but I hope your last couple sessions worked out for you. Let me know what you find out about that window.
I was thrilled with my new wheel/tire setup. I definitely saw a difference. I also saw my new personal best times. My buddy mounted his lap timer in the car for a session and I turned a few 1:34 (1.34.05!) laps.
It was my first time in the Red group. I enjoyed it although the passing in the turns is a whole new experience I felt it really helped my driving following and learning from some of the more hard core drivers. I don't think I held any one up, at least not like the guy in his Ferrari!
I did have a problem I'm bummed about. The rear tires rubbed away the inside lips and liners on both rear fenders. Word from some of the drivers behind me reported seeing puffs of smoke particularly going around 8 where I'm in it pretty good and the G's are high and there are some subtle dips. I never felt anything in the car. You can't really tell from looking at it from the outside but if you run your finger along tte edge you can feel it. I will get a closer look when I swap brakes and tires this weekend but I hope I don't need to replace the fenders and liners.
I will post some video by the weekend for anyone interested.

Good work, Paul. What is that wheel/tire setup you were running?
I don't think you'll need to replace the wheelwell parts - I'd guess that not that much wore off. But you will need to get to the bottom of the problem and make some adjustments.

Similar to yours .... C5Z 18x10.5 Speedlines. I have 305 RA1s in the rear and 275s up front. I think I would have been fine but the car is lowered and, in hindsight, I should have raised it back up. It looked like they wouldn't rub and I had no problems with a brief test drive but they must just barely touch in just the right conditions. Heck, it looks like a 4x4 when it's parked with those on. I actually think all the damage has been done but I will take a closer look.

Bingo - with those tires and wheels, nothing should should rub if the height were closer to stock.

Food for thought:
Since it sounds like you`re rubbing on just the turns with the most extreme lean angles, running larger sway bars may solve your rubbing issues, it worked on my CCW`s with 335-30`s in the rear!
I was there in the white Evo. It was a great day. My best was 1:34.95, so you were a little faster. I am very interested in your video, since we were on track together at least a couple of times. Please let me know if you got any video of my Evo. Thanks.

Hey Richard, I'm sure I'm going to have some fun video of you spending half your day on 3 wheels I should have it up by the weekend.
Thats awful fast Paul !!! Three seconds quicker than my best. So you got lots better than our last outing or tires are awsomel. I'm going to have to hook up my timer and think about doing RED also

Thanks Howie ... I knew I "felt" faster but I was surprised by the actual data. I previously thought December was a break out event for me. I had a bunch of 1:37 laps, at least from studying video. I've never actually had a timer in the car before now. The session with the lap timer I had a passenger too and the car feels quicker when I'm by myself. That may be misleading but the "butt meter" tells me some serious lap by myself could show even lower times. I've had 5 full track days with this car now and it seems everyday I get more comfortable. I still think there are a number of inconsistancies in my line to work on.
Have fun next weekend. I may not be able to get back until March which is a bummer.
I will try to post up some video this weekend but here's a sample. This is a short take of Oli moving through traffic. The Red group, as I said, was very different than I had experienced before. You'd get booted for this behavior in Blue group and here it's part of the fun. It took me a while to get used to it but it really didn't bother me once I got used to watching more closely to who's around you.

Well, really you don't NEED a single thing. Your car will be a blast to drive just as it sits. The only things I've done to my car are added a harness bar and lap bars so I can have 6-point harnesses in both seats. You'll find lot's of controversy on this subject but I prefer having them even though I don't have a roll cage. I drove my first event without any thing at all. Next couple of events I had the harnesses and then I just added track wheels with R compound tires and more aggressive brake pads.
If you've never done this before you don't want stickier tires. You learn a lot about high speed driving from listneing to your tires and learning where the "edge" is. I spent my first 2 years on street tires. Moved to a sitckier but still very much a street tire before I ever considered true R compound tires. Besides, in spite of what anyone might tell you, those GY Z51 tires are quite impressive on the track. You will wear them out a lot faster than just driving on the street though. The Z51 pads will also be fine for quite some time. You do need to check them closely though so you don't run them down to the metal ..... been there and done that!
If you find you like it and as you improve then you can consider upgrading things like tires and brakes. I would say the majority of vette owners who take their cars to the track do so stock and have a blast.
Come with us next time you see a post about it. It's very new driver oriented and there's no pressure, just fun.
I rarely get to see external video of my car and driving.
You did great out there, too. You were fast and keeping right up with me.
You handled the Red Group just fine. I remember dropping inside of you on turn three as we turned up the hill. I was making sure to give you room and made sure that you knew I was there and would give me room. You handled the situation just like a veteran SCCA racer.

All you need now are coilovers and a set of anti-sways and you'll be right in Oli's rear pocket.
This event was my first. All I brought with me was a helmet, a roll of painters tape, and I bought a pair of piloti driving shoes. My car is stock as well.
