Default United States Autobahn Series - May 8th

If you would like to see what your Vette will do, AND not worry about a traffic ticket check this out.

50 miles of Highway 93A in eastern Nevada will be closed May 8th for the running of the Bonneville 100. This is a (very) high speed road rally. You pick a target average speed between 90 and 155 mph and see how close you can match the exact time. You must have a five point harness, Helmet and Nomex to average over 110.

100 miles of high speed driving May 8th (we run both directions). Also, practice on May 6th is good for 1/2 dozen eight mile runs.

Can those of you who have had experience participating in these events provide some insight. The website is informative but have any of you have actually participated. i.e. are these events as well run as indicated in the site materials?
Thanks, in advance for the feedback.

Is this the event that was formerly known as the Silver State Classic?

The SIlver State Classic is organized by a different group. I attended (as a spectator) last years Pony Express which is run by this group. They have a lot of safety requirements and some mandatory classes for Rookies. My website has a bunch of pics from last years Pony Express which was a blast to watch, but was Red Flagged when rain and crickets made the course dangerous. I met 86Moon whom ran the event with his brother navigating.

The goal is to go from point A to point B and keep your average speed at your target speed. Lots of computers, calculators, laptops and NavSat devices. And your tires cannot be more than 4 years old based on the DOT date. For good reasons they are very picky about this point and no one gets past Tech with old or worn tires.

Since my vette is not equiped with any safety gear, I figured that it will cost me about 1500 to attend the first event. Plus a new set of Z tires.

I've run six events with this organization. They are safety oriented and a very fun group of people. The front page of the Web site states that the speed brackets (bracket=target speed = average speed) of 85 to 170 mph. However... the top speed allowed using factory seatbelts is 124 (top average speed of 110). C4 and C5 Coupes equiped with 5 point belts and new(er) Z rated tires are limited to 168 (155 top average speed) And Rookies are limited to 150 (130 average)

If you want to go over 168 a full cage, fuel cell and fire system are required.

I've driven both a C4 and a C5 in these events. In a C4 you will probably need an oil cooler to maintain an average speed in excess of 140. A C5 needs an oil cooler to average 150.

Hope this helps. See you there?
