NC 16 CORVETTE OWNERS CRUISE
(WAXHAW, NC to GRASSY CREEK, VA)
MAY 8-9, 2004
THE ROUTE
Our cruise begins in downtown Waxhaw, NC, near the intersection of NC 75 and NC 16 on Saturday morning, May 8th. Owners: plan to arrive in downtown Waxhaw by 8:00 am as we depart at 8:30 am.
Leaving Waxhaw, we travel north on (NC 16), also known as Providence Road, to the Arboretum Shopping Center at NC 51. For those owners who wish to meet us here instead of beginning in Waxhaw, plan to arrive by 8:30. We will leave the Arboretum Shopping Center at 9:15 am.
Once again north on Providence Road, our route will take us through Charlotte. At the intersection of Providence Road/Queens Road/Hawthorne Lane, we will turn right onto Hawthorne Lane, then left onto Elizabeth Avenue and follow this route into the heart of the city at Trade Street and Tryon Street. We will continue along Trade Street through Gateway Village and on to the intersection of Trade Street and Beatties Ford Road. Johnson C. Smith University will be on your right. We’ll turn right on Beatties Ford Road then left back onto NC 16 just past the bridge.
We’ll cross over I-85 and continue north to the intersection of Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road. For those owners driving from surrounding communities north and west of Charlotte, this will be a great meeting place. We’ll assemble in the parking lot in front of the Mt. Island Harris Teeter. There are fast food restaurants (McDonald’s, Chick Fil A, Bojangles, Wendy’s, Cici’s Pizza). For car owners meeting here, please arrive by 9:30 am. We’ll be departing this stop between 10:00 and 10:15 am. This will be our last Charlotte stop.
We now go west of Lake Norman into Gaston and Lincoln Counties. Passing through Denver and Triangle, we’ll cross over NC Highway 150 with our sights set on Newton, NC and our first stop at DALE EARNHARDT CHEVROLET.
Leaving the dealership, we’ll be heading into Conover and crossing I-40. The grade increases as you see the Brushy Mountains in the distance. We’ll be in Taylorsville and this might be a good time for those who wish to stop for lunch and gas. North of Taylorsville lies Wilkesboro and the start of our mountain climbing adventure.
We’ll be following ‘new 16’ to ‘old 16’, just north of Miller’s Creek and Wilkesboro. The sign is small where you need to turn, so watch carefully for it. Old 16 meanders along a creek so plan on a lot of curvy driving for a while. We’ll be turning left off Old 16 at Colvard Road, which will take us back to the new section of 16. Turn right and we start our ascent on Jefferson and Ashe County.
Follow the signs for 16 into Jefferson and then north to Grassy Creek. There may be a slight deviation in this section of our route (but this will be discussed at our stop in Newton). At the NC/VA Line you’ll see State Line Grocery and an opportunity for stopping for drinks, photos, lotto tickets, etc. We’ll head back into Jefferson and Ashe County for our overnight stay.
THE ACCOMODATIONS
We made every effort to contact country inn owners, B&B operators and motel managers to get reduced pricing for overnight lodging. We found three or four who responded and show them in highlighted print below. The remaining facilities are shown in standard print. We do not make any recommendations as to any of the lodging facilities. The properties shown accepted MC/VISA/AMEX and cash.
For more information on Jefferson and Ashe County, please contact the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center at 336-246-9550 or 888-343-2743 or on the Internet at http://www.ashechamber.com.
