*May 2nd .....all roads lead to Roan for St. Jude
ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROAN FOR ST. JUDE
On Saturday, May 2, 2009, CF members are invited to join together in Hickory, NC for a planned run to Roan Mountain, TN. This will be a great opportunity to stretch your car out on some great mountain roads and raise all important money for our forum’s National Charity – St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Our meeting place is the parking lot of Little Caesar’s Pizza, Lake Hickory Plaza, 1368 US Highway 321 North, Hickory, NC 28601. Lake Hickory Plaza is a Lowe’s Foods-anchored grocery store. Please be there by 8:30 AM and plan to leave out at 9:00AM. The ride up will take about 3 hours and we’ll enjoy some of the twists and turns that the NC Mountains are famous for. Be sure to bring your camera and FRS radios.
We will also have the famous WOEII t-shirt which has been making its rounds throughout the US since 2008. It is being signed by CF members at $10/signature with the proceeds going to St. Jude’s. At the end of this year (2009) it will be auctioned on-line and the proceeds of that sale will go to St. Jude’s as well. To get your signature and the tax-deductible donation, please make a check payable to St. Jude and bring it with you to the event. Please be sure to include your CF screen name on the check.
You pay, you sign, we send your check to Pewter99 (CF Mod Extraordinaire and coordinator of the WOEII shirt world tour), you get the recognition and heartfelt thanks from CF and most importantly, St. Jude gets the benefit for the children. What could be easier?
Once we get to Roan Mountain, we’ll have plenty of great photo opportunities including those at Carver’s Gap at 5512 feet above sea level. For the more adventurous, you’ll be able to hike to the ridgeline and view the mountains in TN and NC. We’ll be having lunch in Roan Mountain (the real town) at Charlie Pritchard’s Whiteway Grill, a downhome local joint with butterfly chicken breasts and veggies, meatloaf, steaks, ribs, big salads, homemade desserts and drinks. It is reasonably priced and has good reviews too.
Finally, we’ve made arrangements for overnight accommodations in Banner Elk, NC at the Best Western Mountain Lodge, approximately 23 miles SE of Roan Mountain on NC Hwy 184, just below Beech Mountain. The rate is $89. For reservations, call 828-898-4571. Be sure to mention you are with the CF group for the rate package.
