Here is tentative information on the Covered Bridge Corvette Cruise I’m organizing for Saturday, March 16, for any of you who is interested in participating.

Cruise departs at 10:30 a.m. CST from the parking lot of Shades Valley High School, 6100 Old Leeds Rd., Irondale, AL – near Old Leeds Road/Exit 134 from Interstate 20 – on the east side of Birmingham.

Route (about 150 miles) includes three historic covered bridges in Blount County, AL, including the Easley Bridge pictured above. We’ll have lunch at Benedikt's, a cross-roads restaurant in a rural area of St. Clair County, AL. Estimated cost is $10 per person. Be forewarned: There is a crafts shop on the premises.

After visiting the bridges, we'll make a stop at the to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville as we travel west through Blount County to catch Interstate 65. This amazing compound, also known as Mother Angelica’s Magnificent Temple, is of Romanesque-Gothic design and was built on 360 acres of remote farmland.

Those who need to drop out at that point are welcome to do so.
The rest of us will repair to my house in Mountain Brook, AL, for dinner. Dreamland will cater the BBQ pork and chicken, potato salad, baked beans and slaw at a cost of $6 a person.

If you aren't getting e-mail updates on this event, let me know at jdwillis@mindspring.com.

I'm interested, that's for sure. :smash:
For the people coming in from Atlanta, where does that cruise start? Do we need to settle on a meeting place on the west side (like Six Flaggs drive)? Let's see a list of participants too.

Hey, Shawn. With this new thread, I'm asking folks to let me know if they plan to come. In the earlier thread -- http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=204865 -- several people from the ATL area expressed interest: Aviator, TestAmenTC5, C5Brian, nevrenuf, joecaver and you. Other possibles (some from ATL) include GenerationX, 96LT4, Bigtoe, D.Thrasher, S.White, Corvette611 and Vinnie.

I'll start a list in this thread as soon as folks commit to the cruise. :yesnod:

Once we have a list, we can coordinate a rendezvous spot for the ATL folks who are interested in caravaning. The Six Flags exit might be a good spot to meet (it's on the route for folks heading west from ATL), if there is a convenient parking lot at that exit.

Jim, how far from Atlanta (say downtown) are the three spots? 1) Starting, 2) Lunch, 3) Your house. I'm trying to get an idea of mileage and length of day.

I am marking it on my calandar. It sounds like a good trip. I'm not real sure but I think there is a Sam's or Walmart at the 6 Flags exit we (the Atl. bunch) could use their lot to meet up.

Hey, Mike. It’s not any further from your house to my house as it is from my house to your house! :p: And, ideally, you won’t be driving it at night in a monsoon like when ms.savewave and I came to visit you and Christy that cold December night a little more than a year ago!

Heck, I even got stopped by the Villa Rica, GA, cops for running “an illegal license plate frame!!!” It said National Council or Corvette Clubs and, according to the cop in question, obscured my plate enough that he couldn’t tell I was from the Heart of Dixie!

Seriously, Mapquest says it is 136.8 miles from ATL to the starting point at Shades Valley High School in Irondale, AL. They say it will take two hours and 35 minutes to drive the route, an average of 55 mph. But it’s interstate 99 percent of the way, so I’d say the drive should be just a little more than two hours if you average 65 mph.

And I’ve never known you to drive that slow, Mike! It takes me about 2 hours and 15 minutes to get from my house to GenerationX’s place in Buckhead.

We haven’t selected the restaurant, but we’ll probably have lunch in or near Oneonta, AL. Mapquest shows the distance from Shades Valley H.S. to Oneonta, AL to be 48.6 miles.

The driving around in Blount County, AL from Oneonta to see the three covered bridges in that area is an estimated 20 miles.

The drive from Oneonta to the Clarkson Bridge in Cullman County, AL, is about 45 miles.

The drive from the Clarkson Bridge to my house is about 66 miles.

So, the total mileage from downtown Atlanta to Shades Valley H.S. to Oneonta, to the Blount County bridges, to the Cullman County bridge to my house would be 316.5.

I’d guess that your odometer, starting at your house (30 miles south of Hotlanta) and ending up at your house, would turn something like 515 to 520 miles if you did the whole deal.

Aviator has already told me that he and Roz are going to spend the night at the Hampton Inn on Kilgore Memorial Drive in Irondale near my house. Why don’t you and Christy do the same thing? That way you don’t have to worry about getting home late Saturday night.

Hey guys! Kelly and I are getting interrested! We might see if the Nashville people might be interrested also!

Local people, can you give me a list of places Kelly and I can stay. If we have some interrest from the Nashville group we will need to reserve some rooms. We are looking for a decent hotel that is resonably priced.

Thanks guys, and hope to see you soon!

Hey, Adam! :D Glad to hear you and Kelly are available! :yesnod: Bring a bunch of Nashville folks with you. The more the merrier so long as we don't put everybody's Corvette on one of those antique bridges at one time!

I'll check around and see what kind of hotel rates are available. Aviator has already told me he's staying at the Hampton Inn/Irondale and I see they post a AAA rate on the internet at $69. Almost as close to my house, however, is the Hampton Inn/Mountain Brook at $66.60 AAA rate. There is a Baymont on Hwy. 280 about five or six miles away at a AAA rate of $53.10.

Thanks for the invite, Jim. Count on the spousal unit and myself making the cruise. I look forward to meeting you and the other "local" members.

BTW, I understand you're out of the BSS t-shirts. Any idea when you'll have more?

Jim, we may be interested in the hotel thing as well, so please post those details as you find them out. :)

I'm not sure if I've ever posted on here or not, but my Mother-In-Law bought a '02 Torch Red Coupe a while back. Christy mentioned that she might ask them to come along as well. I'll let you know for sure on all of us as we get closer to the date.

Hey, Mike. No, I didn't know Christy's Mom had gotten a Vette. Tell Mom we'd love to have her join us in her new Torch Coupe. You can't have too many Corvette people for a Cruise!

Got an e-mail from Mark (he and Roz are in Hawaii this week) and he wants to stay in one of the Hampton Inns listed above because of points. If you need another brand or a different rate, let me know so I know what kind of information will assist you.

Also heard from JetJockey&C5. He's in Orlando, but says he and Monique are going to try to make this event, too.

Looks like the potential of having a lot of old Corvette friends and new Corvette friends together on the same Corvette adventure! :yesnod: :smash:

Jim,

I am genuinely sorry that I must miss this gathering. Believe it or not, I miss seeing all you guys in the "Virtual Corvette Club" and look forward to the next gathering that we will be able to make. Which of the April 27th events will you be doing? Corvette Only Poker Run? Circle City Corvettes? Savannah? I have registered for the Circle City "Beach Run 2002" or whatever it is they are calling it.
