How do I disassemble a torque tube?
I want to inspect the rubber bushings on a used TT that I bought.
I can see the snap ring here:
Other side:
Overall so far she looks clean, what good that does we will find out.

you've gotta get that monster snap ring off. I tried this yesterday and couldnt, i need to find out where to get big snap ring pliers that dont cost 100 bucks.

well from there you are supposed to unscrew those 3 phillips head screws and put a harmonic balancer puller on using those 3 screws and a slide hammer to yank out the internals. But i would think you could lightly tap the clutch engaging splines to remove it but ive yet to get that far.

you only need to remove the big C clip from the tranny end of the tube then take a rubber mallet and tap the engine side of the tube spline and it will slide out. Getting the C clip off is quite a challenge if you do not have the appropriate sized C clip pliers. What I do is arc weld a long needle nose plier to the c clip holes, just a small beed. This will keep the pliers in the c clip during removal and reinstallation. Once reinstalled, simply wiggle the pliers out of the c clip. works great.

i tried to modify my needlenose pliers to sit in the snap ring holes nice and snug but that thing is stiff. There has to be an easier way w/o needing a welder or monster snap ring pliers.

Borrowed a standard set of snap ring pliers and as noted above they are too small. You need at least 1 1/4" spread and the standard set is only 1 1/8".
See what I can borrow from work tomorrow.

I plan to do this when we install my new motor... I've bought the aluminum replacement for the rubber bushing. I figure after 109K miles, we need to replace this thing as well, since I'm planning on putting over 400+HP to the wheels with the new motor.

Buy a set of needle nose pliers that have about a 45 degree angle on the end of them. File about an 1/8 down from the tip on both sides. Not alot. Just enough to have a ridge. Then they will seat in the holes and the C-clip will come right out. Get a set with long handles. Not a shorty set. Kaley

Good News!!!
First of all these mac tool snap ring pliers are the shat!!!!
The part # is TPQ56. The price is around $26-28.
10 seconds later and this is what we have:
I was working on the tt using my workmate:
I stood the tt up on some bubble wrap and braced it against the workmate. Use the block of wood and my hammer, I gave it one good wack. The driveshaft popped right out.
I pulled the driveshaft out and the rubber bushings look excellent!!!

Do a net search and maybe you will find a distributor in your area.
Looks like Rodney will set you up.

Oh shat!
Rodney, The part # on the TT that I have is a 12564456. There is also a 12564457. Is the 12564456 for a 01+ 6 speed?
EDIT: Darn!!!
12564456 is the part # for an automatic.
Ok who needs a torque tube in excellent condition for a A4?
