Default Should wheels be mounted with an Air gun ?

I am taking my car in for PA inspection. They are going to pull the wheels. When they go back on , should I tell them to torque them by hand or is the air gun ok ? What is the correct torque for wheels on my 98 ? thanks

Air gun is a no no

Torque should be done by hand at 100 lbs.
Best done in increments, like 60, 80, 100

No way baby!!! My dealer did this to me four different times. And after each time they replaced the lugs for me because they ruined the stainless steel covers on the lugs. And I put the replacements on myself. So it's a No No situation.

No! They can damage your lug nuts, wheel studs, rotors or wheels. Should always tighten in 3 passes using 35, 70 and 100 ft. lbs. in a star pattern using a torque wrench.

No air tools!

Have them do it by hand. They need to use a torque wrench with a 19mm socket and progressively tighten the lug nuts down - first 60 lb/ft, then 80, finally 100.

You REALLY need to watch the guys with the impact guns. There are guns and compressors out there that are capable of 400 ft. lbs. A couple of years ago, I has a "cheesy garage" do a quick tire rotation on my "regular car". The guy put them on so tight that I actually bent a lug wrench trying to get one off. I'm a pretty big guy, and I could barely do it!
If you must have someone else pull your vette wheels, make sure that they hand-torque them!

Is there any problem with them taking the lugs off with a gun? They are not chrome ? thanks

Not as much as putting them on with an air gun. The problem with most anybody using these things in shops in the first place, is the fact that they are more interested in speed than getting the socket on straight and snug before pulling the trigger. That's why you're more likely to see boogered up or rounded lug nuts from some guy taking them off with a gun. The good news here though is the fact that since you don't have chrome to worry about, your's are relatively inexpensive to replace. I bought all new ones for mine about a year and a half ago because they were getting too boogered up from having been removed with guns. I went to rockauto.com and bought the Raybestos brand replacements and was very impressed with the quality when I received them. They seem to be made of a slightly harder steel than the OEM and the cad plating was good. HTH

I use a gun on mine, but only after loosening by hand, then I spin em off with the gun to save time. For installation I start em by hand, spin em on with the gun until they just touch, then torque by hand....

I agree, I had to have my rotors replaced - they were all warped. Who do you think paid for this one?!
