How much should this service cost?
I just had shocks put on and am told that the rear wheel bearings are shot.
The local Big-O store said that you need some specialized tools to do it and they don't have the capability.
I'm going to call around to see.
What would be a normal price to get this done?
I'm in the Louisville, KY area.
Anyone from around here know of someone I should call?
Thanks,

To do mine cost $450 for both, I took the housings off and brought them to a local shop. Needed them done and back on the car in two days.
Van Steel, one of the supporting vendors, does this service.

I didn't think it would be that much.
Don't know if I can do that this month.

I had van steel rebuild the trailing arms and bearings on both my '72 and'64 vettes. He does a good job. I heard that rebuilding them yourself is a pia and I sent it out. I think it's about 280 a side to do, but haven't priced it lately

My friend that owns a tranny rebuild shop did mine for $200... I wouldn't pay more then $500 for both sides though. If you have patience, can follow instructions, and mechanical ability, you can do it yourself.

How long original rear wheels bearing can last in milles cause mine are still on the car and im not sure if it has 85000 Km or 185ooo Km? When i got it, it read 50000 Km and it was 11 years old . I put 35000 Km on it in 15 years.

I think it depends a lot on how often you drive the car, and how hard you drive it. At my shop, we redo wheel bearings on every vehicle once a year, but we're over protective. I'd say about 80K miles, it's time to get 'er done...

You could do this yourself if you are above average handy. Substitute an old spindle sanded down for a slip fit instead of buying the setup tool. Here is a site you should look at for the step by step procedure with pictures:

Rear Wheel Bearings
Already mentioned Bairs is my choice because you can send the whole rear control arm to them in their own supplied crates mailed to you and you units will have new front bushing and the disc rotors will be rivetted to the spindle just like your car left the factory. I have found that FedX ground is most reasonable means to ship. I have used them only once.

Don't know how the local Big-O determined that they were bad.
They did mention that 1 of the wheels could be wobbled back and forth. ( I assume that is how they could tell).
Car is supposed to be 24000 miles. Been sitting for years. HMM. . .
Maybe I got shafted? Or could sitting for that long mess with them?
Oh, well, I still love the car.
I will not be doing them myself. Time is something I don't have an abundance of.
I will remove them and send them off if I can.
How much of a job is it to remove them?
