How rare?
Hi all, thanks in advance for your input.
We just got a Vette for my wife and plan some custom work. I've been told this car is a fairly uncommom combination, although I can't find any production numbers anywhere. I'd like to find out before we start because I don't want to change anything if it is rare. The car is a 69 Convertible, numbers match, 427/390, auto, ps, pb, power windows, tinted glass, headrests, Black with Gun Metal interior.

All of these figures come from the Corvette Black Book. The question you need to ask yourself is; If I modify the car, what will it do to the resale value when I sell it? If your not going to sell it, then that is not an issue. Good luck. Scott

Not that rare considering a 1969 Corvette is the LEAST rare of the "Chrome Bumper cars" and the 390hp L36 was the base Big Block engine. It's not a car you'll see at every car show, but nothing in the "Big Leagues" as a L89 or L88.

Your car is basically identical to mine except for the color comination and tranny. Not terribly rare, but any big block convertible is collectable and worth more unmolested. Mods, especially ones that would be difficult to reverse, will generally hurt the value of the car (the rule of thumb I've always heard is if you want to know the value of a chrome bumper car, take the going price and subtract from it whatever it would cost to return it to original). My impression has been that color combos, even if relatively rare, do little to increase the value of the car.

Now, I know this is your car, and you can do with it as you please, but think hard about customizing. You have a very desired car. I don't see the logic in spending money on modifications to end up making a car worth less. I don't know what you're considering changing, but I'd think long and hard before making changes that can't easily, inexpensively or even be reversed. I think non matching numbers cars are far smarter to use for such things. But hey, it's your car and your money, so ???

Not overly rare. Most people don't realise that nearly half of '69 vettes were big blocks.
How long do you plan to keep it? Are you owning it as an investment or as a pleasure vehicle? Are you concerned if the value changes?
Think along those lines and decide whether to keep it such that you can go back to stock as needed, or go completely away from stock as you see fit.

Thanks for all the input. I'm not going to change anything that can't be reversed easily. The major thing is the paint. We had a real nice custom green mixed up to use. I realize color is not a big issue to some people, but, when you spend thousands to make the car right and look nice, it takes thousands to change it back. The other mods aren't that big a deal, stereo, hood, intake, sidepipes, 700R4, wheels, tires, fuel fill, custom grill, seats, and lots of little stuff. Just don't want the same vette as everyone else.
