Default Harmonic balancer not going on all the way

Yesterday after installing the cam and and timing gears and chain, we tried to put on the harmonic balancer, it went on almost all the way but once it went in to certain point it just wouldnt go on anymore, you could see about a 1/4 inch of the shiny part thats supposed to go unto the crank, also the pulleys dont line up by about the same amount, im trying to put on the stock balancer. Could this be because i got a double roller timing gear, and thats its possibly thickers than the stock timing gear, and thus when the harmonic balancer pusshes up against it, it doesnt go as far in as it used to??? Any suggestions or advice? Should we just try to apply more force?

Your crank gear is probably not on far enough, how did you get it on ?

Push the cam gear into the block as far as possible rotate the motor a little and see how far the cam comes out, it should not come out very much.

Also how are you putting the harmonic balancer on, with the correct tool?

How could the gear not be fully on when the timing chain lines up perfectly from the top gear to the bottom gear? I did use all the proper tools to install the crank gear and the harmonic balancer. Im thinking of just trying it again and try to apply more pressure.............

The cam can slide out making them line up perfectly, but it will not be in the correct place.

Yep. I can say this from recent experience. Use light coat of grease on snout and tap that balancer key in just where and how you want it (straight and level/parrallel with crank snout). Next use a balancer tool to draw that balancer slowly but all the way to timing cover. You can use other tricks to heat and bang on the balancer but the dedicated tools work the best.
Good luck. cardo0
