maybe its me, but my '78 seems to be burning up my feet when im driving it, this thing gets really hot and is almost impossible to drive with the windows up. i put a dual 2 1/2 exhaust running back, anyone think those pipes could be toasting me up? if so, would header/exhaust wraps help out at all?

There are lots of threads on here about controlling cabin heat on our cars. You need to check out your ductworking, seal up any holes between the firewall and the cab, and consider installing a water cut-off valve on your heater hoses. Also, if you are concerned about your exhaust causing heat problems, you can install heat shielding between the carpet and the floorpan. Also realize your butt sits maybe 1 foot off of the ground, and since a lot of highways are black, they radiate a lot of heat.

The heat shielding is a pretty good idea since it also helps control road noise in the car. If I were guessing, you probably aren't getting much heat in the cabin due to exhaust, unless you have installed catalytic converters under the drivers side and passenger side floorboard.

I think the 1978 already had a vacuum operated water cut-off valve in line with one of the heater hoses. It requires a vacuum to close th evalve; thus keeping hot water from flowing through the heater core .

If the valve is bad, or its not getting vacuum (the vacuum line slipped off or cracked) ... that would cause hot water to always be routed through the heater core - regardless of your heat/AC selector position.

I would also check your cataletic converter it might be plugged and getting red hot. And yes that can start a fire.

I just found out there is heat shielding in my 76 under the carpet. I was getting 2" of water out of the interior on the passengers side...but at least I found out it had that!

i have the same problem on my ss drive for ahwile and where my feet r i can feel the heat . i also have a duel exhuest on mine so that prob 1 of teh reason y i can feel it on my side guess i need new heat sheilding 2

I took one of my co-workers for a ride in my car. Even with the A/C on, he noticed the heat on his feet. My heater core has been bypassed, no hot water flowing to it.

He keeps ribbing me, saying he expects me to come to work some day with my feet in bandages.

the cats are just before the crossmember so sorta close to driver and pass seats i suppose. i have had problems with the heater and ac, i dont have ac hooked up at all right now and it does feel like theres a light flow of hot air coming from the vents no matter what the position is on. thanks

heck my feet get hot and i have my core bypassed and i don't have cats. just dynomax headers and 2.5 inch pipe.

I have full length headers and 3" pipes all the way back...It does indeed get a little...hot

There is a tunnel shield on top of the tranny for 68-79 Vettes. It is a 2" foam collar that prevents heat from entering the interior cabin. Mine was all but gone on my 71. I bought a new one from Dr. Rebuild and glued it on with weatherstrip adhesive when reinstalling my rebuilt tranny. It took care of my hot foot problem.
