Default 1969 427/435 Six Speed???

I've owned a 1969 427/435 4 speed for about 34 years now. Does anybody know what would be involved in installing a six speed transmission? My goal is to lower the rpm while cruising on the freeway. Fourth gear revs around 3,000 plus and I'm wondering if there's any way to get that down to around 2,000 or so. Anybody have any ideas.....? Any suggestions are welcome

Very pretty car, indeed.

Instead of a 6-speed, consider the Tremec TKO 5-speed. It goes in very easily and will make your 3000 rpm cruise 2000 rpm with a 0.68:1 5th gear. I have some pictures from my install on my webpage in sig.

On a recent road trip I got 20.7 mpg.

Keisler has kits for both the Tremec 5 Speed and the T56 six speed. The Tremec has a .68 overdrive so it works great on the highway. It has more a split between gears but that should not be a problem with the 427.

The 6 speed requires that the crossmember be cut, the 5 speed does not require it (though it is easier to do the swap with a removable crossmember). Since your car is an original 427/435 car, I would go for the 5 speed so I would not have to hack the frame.

The T-56 6-speed also requires you to cut the tunnel for clearance which may be something you don't want to do.

The richmond 6-speed goes in easier than the Tremec T56, but you get a much older design. The richmond still has external linkage where the tremec 5 and 6 speed are internal.
