Default Loose Fan Shaft

I need some help. While applying belt dressing to quiet a squeeking belt I noticed that the engine fan looked a little wobbly. I shut the engine off and could move the fan and housing about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from side-to-side on the water pump shaft. The water pump is tight to the engine and not leaking. It is not supposed to have that much play in it, is it?? What the problem?? Thanks for your help. TAH81

My guess is the water pump is on it's way out. I had a rattle at the fan while running but it did not leak. I used a piece of pipe and applied pressure to the belt while it was running and the rattle went away. I change out the water pump and all is well.

If I understand this right, your water pump shaft is tight with no play, but the fan and clutch are loose on the shaft? Sounds like the fan clutch is bad, but check the mounting studs and nuts first.
