I think that he is mistaken.. Don't think that they ever put a Dana 36 in a C3 Vette...

I think some of the early C4s, 'specially with automatics, came with the Dana-36, and eventually, some of the HD C4s came with the Dana-44 carrier/ring-pinion gear-set.
I'm pretty-sure that all late ('80-'82) Corvettes came with Dana-44s

ok.. It's tough to break anything with the stock power of a '84 ...
However- the TPI's from '85 - '91 had quite some torque.... enough to break D36's...
