Default low gears

I ran a 12-bolt 4:11 posi in my Nova. That car had an L-82 350 out of a wrecked Vette in it, and I had warmed the engine up nicely when I built it.
In fact, I blew up two of the old 10-bolt rear ends before using the 12-bolt posi. It sure did launch! The '70 Nova was a lighter car than the C3 so it was remarkable. I had a B&M modified Turbo 400 and it would make the tires spin enough on the 1-2 shift that it would surpirse the heck outta ya!

They were too low for my choise, to use on the Vette. 65MPH seemd a stretch to cruise at, even though I had a small block. It would be going about 4500 RPM at 65 to 70 if If I remember correctly.

It definitely would improve your launch! If you are running an automagic, I would recommend using a stall convertor instead. When I put the stroker in my Vette, I used a 2500 stall convertor. It can launch almost as well as my Nova used to, without the tire spin. And if I want to, I can of course do nice burnouts too.

Just my two cents!

Without an overdrive I feel 411's are too steep for the street. I ran them for years in my 75 bigblock, first with a 400 but later a 700R4, a T5 and now a Tremec and I really appreciate shifting into 5th.
I would stick with the 373's .
I switched the mustang from 373 to 456 and talk about a useless gear. 3.27 first and 456 rearend. 1 car length out and you are shifting. .68 overdrive brings them back down to about 3.2.
Without overdrive I wouldn't have 411's anymore

My 67 Camaro w/a warmed up 406 and a full manual Turbo 350 has a 12 bolt w/4.10 gears. While it goes like stink when you launch (when you can get traction), it really isn't practicle to run on the highway with unless you like turning approx 4K RPM's at 70 MPH and burning LOTS of $2+ a gallon 93 octane gas.

Now if the vehicle had overdrive that might be different, but w/o it I wouldn't use 4.10's in any street car unless your goal is to participate at the "stoplight" drags.

Good Luck w/you choice.

I ran 4.11 gears for about 3 years. i broke the 4.11s and then went to 3.70 gears. The car was much better and actually was just as quick in the 1/4 mile. I now have a Tremec with overdrive. What a difference the OD makes. Best of both worlds. Launches good and cruises at 2200 rpm. 4.11s are a little steep for the street IMO.

If your engine will turn 8500rpm plus and you just plan on playing on the street then I would go with the 4.11 gears. Otherwise I would stay with the 3.73. Now I have run as much as 4.88 or 5.14 gear on the street but that was behind a 9000rpm destroked Big Block . Not a hiway runner by any means.

I had 4.11's in my street rod, with 275/60R15 tires and a 4-speed, the tach read half (x100) of the speedo. With a tired 350, I didn't feel comfortable cruising over 60. With a fresh 400, I could do 70 (3500rpm). That was when the speed limit was 55 and traffic moved at 65-70. The guy I sold it to kept the gears and drove all over New England. But, with today's higher speed limit, it would be tough to keep up with traffic.

At the opposite extreme, I could dump the clutch at 3000 and speed shift thru the gears, spinning the tires all the way thru 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. 1st gear was only good for about 10 feet!

I did a make-shift 1/4 mile once, and just got to 6000 rpm at the end, or about 120 MPH, so it was the ideal gear for drag racing with tall tires.

While that was fun, I really think the car would have been faster with 3.73s, and not as traction or cruise limited.

Joe
