Been sitting a long time...popping, backfires, and dies
I have a 68 that I recently brought home. It's been sitting in storage for a good long while. It starts fine and runs, but when I start it and it's idling there are lots of small pops. If you give it much gas going down the road it will backfire when you let off the gas, and finally my dad told me when he was driving it around and really "goosed it" was his term (I've been afraid to get on it that hard) he said it flooded out and died. I'm assuming the carb needs to be adjusted? Being that I don't know much about carbs should I just take it in and have it done or is it a straightforward process with either a service manual or one of the tech help threads? I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but have never messed with a carb at all so wanted a push in the right direction.
Thanks in advance from the Newbie.

Melting Slicks
Popping can be a few things. First thing to check is to make sure plug wires are going to correct plugs. If that's ok, you may have a valve that's not fully seating or a bad seat.

sounds like its time too restore the carb.
if it has been sitting for a long time there can be pretty much
crap in it.
it isnt so hard to do by yourself.
empty the tank can be water in it.
also change the plugs and all the fluids in the motor.
maybe you must reset the timing also

What carb do you have?
If it's a holley, sounds like a bad (i.e. leaking)
power valve or one not seated properly as said above.
Backfiring when letting off gas could be a sign of rich mixture.
Does it run OK during accelleration?

Suck out the gas in tank.
Mop out any sludge/debris with non metal flexi rod(use a rubber torch to peer in neck.(DONT CREATE ANY SPARKS!!!)
Check rear hose,s not cracked
Check front hoses to pump not cracked, twisted or collapsed.
Check fuel pump (no leaks outa vent holes)
Remove OLD filter at carb.Discard put in new filter +spring.
Check for bad plug wires ie burnt broken loose etc.
Try a little fuel in tank(correct octane)
NO IMPOVEMENT YET? now its checkout time for ignition system.
Plugs ok?correct spec? boots not loose? etc
Renew breaker points,condenser,cap.
Check cap towers to leads tight.
Check for bad earth wire under breaker plate.
NOTHING YET? carb time. look up "LARS" TUNING PAPERS" on the forum theyre invaluable if you need his help well he is just about amazing with carbs.
Lastly if you got some improvement on running its time to check all pipes for vacumn leaks then time the engine better than where you are at present.
Its a long progressive job good luck it will be worth it in the end.
