I was looking at a 73 convertible this afternoon that is for sale in my area. Most of the car looked good including the frame except for this part. The pic is of the part that is located in the back of the rear wheel well on both sides. It looks like a body mount point and the metal portion above the rubber bushing was pretty rusty and flaked of easily. My question is this a big problem?

That is a body mount you are looking at and it looks bad. I would pass on that one. The body mounts themselves are not to hard to replace, I did mine last summer. But, it looks like the metal is fairly rotted away and I bet the rest of the body mounts look the same way. Just my .02. Good luck.

The flaking rust is an indication of severe corrosion. Of equal concern is the areas that you can not see... (windshield pillar, etc). I would pass on this one.

Those rear body mounts rust on MANY sharks. They're shaped like a "cup" and hold water and mud. It's NOT a bad job to replace them...a bit of a PIA. You'll find many cars with good, solid frames and rusty rear mounts. I wouldn't let this be the only issue to cause you to "pass" on the car. Chuck

The cups are reproduced and held in place by rivets. You can make a tool to to flatten the rivet end...I used a damaged air chisel, cut the end off and made it convex, just deep enough to simulate the factory crunch...
