77 Horn...rarely works, help
77 Tilt and Tele...
The problem is I need to have the annual safety inspection, but the horn only works once in a while.
Yesterday it worked, but when I started the car and headed out, it quit working.
Today it again worked...for maybe 2 beeps.
I have disassembled and reassembled the horn in the steering wheel. Nothing seems to be broken.
I have replaced the horn relay.
Any more advice??

Maybe the little spring in there is worn out? Check for loose wires. Hopefully someone else has had more horn problems than I have. I broke those little nylon spacers once.

Trade you my wiper problem for your horn problem.

If the horn is like the one in a '74 with the tilt/tele you might want to re check the bottom ring that makes the metal to metal contact that activates the horn. My horn would only sound once in a while. I removed the assembly from wheel and then took some fine sand paper to the bottom of the ring. Apparently some surface rust or substance was on the ring that did not allow a good contact. The horn now works exactly as it should again.

This link will help you understand the horn functioning and may lead you to the real culprit. Although, intermittant problems are the worst ones to try and diagnose!

There is an adjustment screw for the voice coil on the back side of the horn. It's kind of a funny looking head on the small machine screw. You might solve the problem by turning that screw maybe a 1/4-1/2 turn clockwise. If that doesn't work, try CCW. It would help to know if you are getting power to the horn while it's not working, the above method will do no good at all if you are not getting power.
