Default Cam machining older block

Have a 74 454 that I want to install a cam in. Have read in several places that new cams need to be machined (cam end) to fit "older" blocks. What is considered older?

Interesting!. I think if you install a hydraulic roller cam or solid roller cam the end may need machining or installing a cam from a cam from a newer chevy V-8, 1986+?

I just went through that, any pre 66 396 block needed the rear cam ground, or they were ground from the factory, so to lubricate through the camgrove, up to the lifter galley. 66 and up 427 454 blocks, do not need rear cam bearing ground, as the actual jornal in the block is ground instead. This allows fluid to flow aroundthe back side of the bearing to the lifter gallaries, or the under side of the bearing.
