Default Steel or Composite rear spring?

I will be doing a suspension overhaul over the winter. I'm not sure what spring to go with. Steel 9 leaf replacement or a composite monospring. I'm not worried about keeping it original. I want the best ride I can get. I really don't drive the car to hard or race it. Anyone input as to the + or - about either one? The cost is some what of a factor to me, so I really need the input to sway me to go mono. Thanks

Think I am going with a stiff (6 or 7 leaf ) steel spring to save $, not only are the mono ones more exp you have to get the right shock (read: more $) or it will bounce. I am not looking for an auto cross car, just a firm daily driver type. Plus less chance of breaking or splitting. When set up right it sounds like the mono are great for smooth roads and tight corners.

I tried re-arching the 9-leaf that came with my car a few times - no luck.

I'm pretty happy with the 9-leaf I got from Eaton Spring. It pretty much looks like the original spring, too.

I've had both and prefer the composite spring. They are more expensive and shocks are required. Composites are quieter and give a nicer ride IMHO.

I tried two different LB rated mono springs on my last vette and didn't notice that much of a difference during cornering.

~Somebody~ once said on the here...
that a heavier sway bar will have much more of an impact on cornering than a stiff spring. Shocks & springs are primarily for a nice ride & keeping your tires on the ground.

I love the smoother ride that the mono spring has. Make sure to purchase it from Vette Brakes. Some on this board were complaining that the other compaines mono springs were making their car sit too high in the rear.

Given the same rating, the steel leaf spring will ride harsher than the monospring because of the friction between the leaves. Consider the 7 leaf spring carefully, it is extremely stiff and could be very uncomfortable on the street.

For what its worth, I have a 7 leaf spring and I'm about to replace it with another 7 leaf spring. This topic has been debated many times on this forum and there is no right or wrong answer...just opinions and preferences. My vette is a weekend rider, no racing. The ride with a steel spring and monroe shocks is acceptable for the amount I drive it. I think the glass spring will offer the best ride if that is most important. If you want a functional spring for less $ go steel. No vette is going to be very smooth regardless of spring type.

Composite has a much better ride and the weight savings was massive!

Is Eaton local to us? Are they fairly priced?

Try their website for your application. I think I paid around $150 or so after shipping - not sure, it's been a while, but I thought it was fair given that I was looking for something that appeared "correct" and the ride height wasn't out of whack - it's actually right on.

No troubles since.

Composite gave me a dramatically better ride. Rear sits a little high but seems to be settling over time. I don't race or drive too hard but I've noticed that the car doesn't drift on the freeway and handles better on bumpy roads. And you lose about 35 lbs in unsprung weight
