Default 68 Power Steering ?

A couple questions for someone with a 68 327 with power steering. Does the belt go on the center or outer groove on the engine?

Is the pulley pressed on the pump, or held on with a nut?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks Cali! Does your pulley come real close to the pointed bracket that welds to the fron crossmember?

Quite close. But so did my other Vettes. not to worry it will fit. Hardest part is getting that %$@ bracket in.

All GM power steering pumps had a pulley that was retained by a nut until the 1975 model year. You remove the nut and the pulley should come off fairly easily. It sits on a taper and actually drives through a key and keyway.

Starting in 1975 (and from then on) the pulley was an interference fit to the pump driveshaft. (There is no nut). You require a special puller and an installation tool to take the pulley on and off. They can be purchased or borrowed from most automotive supply stores.

ON 1975 and LATER PUMPS
DO NOT try and use a conventional puller to remove this type of pulley. You will damage the pulley and probably the pump.

DO NOT try and install this type pulley by pressing directly onto the pump driveshaft. You will damage parts inside the pump.
