If you can get the code off the rear end, the optional ratios for 78 are
3.08 code OK
3.36 code OM
3.55 code OH
3.70 code OJ

I know what the gear ratios are (I have 3:70 OJ), but what did the G95 option get you? One of those or a different one?

What was the Optional gear ratio that was offered in '78?

The G95 code was used for the optional 3:36 "highway ratio" when L82 and 4-speed were specified! All other ratios were dictated by motor, transmission and state emission regulation...so California always got a 3:55 ratio while high altitude (above 4,000 feet) also got the 3:55. Other states would not permit the 3:36 sale in their state such as Florida and Cook County Illinois among others.

The 3:36 ratio was the equivalent to the 3:08 "economy" axle for better highway mileage...therefore referred to as the "highway ratio" more high-end! Remember now this is a time when 55 mph was being pushed by the feds and states complied due to federal highway funds...states would limit the sales of these optional "highway" axles to show feds how good they were.

So G95 would call up the optional 3:36 highway axle, while others were specified depending on other options... as a result, GU4 was the 3:08, GV7 was the 3.55, and the GS4 (3.70). these are called out on the build sheet but not listed on a sales materials because they were not available as an option for purchase. Hope this helps.
