Default The Cost of Good Paint

I'm going to go from a 2 tone White and Black(under) 81 T-Top to a Metallic Crimson color with some good layers of clear coat.

Does anyone know what this will cost from a good company? (not Mayco or any bad paint places)

Just trying to get an idea on what to expect.

I have been hoping to paint my car for a few years now...and have since lost the funding...if U know what I mean?!

When I was looking at it, I was figuring ~$3k for a decent job...up to $5k for a really nice job.

From what I remember, it shouldn't really matter what U have on it now as the "good" places told me they basically strip the whole car down anyway.

Good luck...let us know how it goes!

With 17 years at DuPont and additional 7 with GM prior to that, I can tell you that you get what you pay for. As far as your choice in color to a Crimson Red Metallic you've picked one of the most expensive colors. Any Red based color is the most expensive generally from $80.00 a gallon for a pastel to $ 300.00 for the latest glamour shades. Clear is another point of intrest, a gallon of 7600S general purpose clearcoat will set you back $120.00 -$170.00 per gallon or $ 200.00 plus for some of the better long lasting clears. In short, expect to spend on material alone $800.00, most body shop rates for their painters are $80.00 per hour with a minimum of 30 hours for an all over. Ask to have the clear wet sanded and buffed and tack on another 12.0 hours. Do Not take your car to anyone promising to paint you car for $279.00 or you'll find everything painted, windshield, molding, tires.

A desent paint job from a desent shop, not show quality should run in the $ 3500.00 to $ 4500.00 range. Hope this answers some questions.

Good Luck, Marc

It can add up. I painted my own and had $1200-$1300 in just liquid and consumables (sand paper, masking, polishing compounds, ...)

i recently had an estimate for $8200 at Austin Corvette, then another in Round Rock, TX(just north of austin)- a place recommended to me by a forum member - and their estimate was ballpark $6500. I have no significant body damage, just the typical stress cracks in the fiberglass.
i'd say a decent paint job on the fiberglass corvette is going to start around $5000...but two-tone is probably fairly higher

also... i ordered $500 worth of weatherstripping, emblems, door sills etc. for the painter to replace. You're paying him for the labor of taking if off and putting it on, so it's a good time to replace that stuff. Plus, an old emblem will stick out like a sore thumb on a new paint job.

Consider taking off the bumpers, emblems, mirrors etc to possibly save some dough on labor. That's what i'm going to do, and then just give him the new stuff to replace when he's done.

After all the additives and other mix-ins, my paint materials ran about $1100 for sealer, primer, base and clear coats. (All high-end PPG products) This is only material costs and does not include labor or equipment.

Of course also it depends on the area of the country, how fast you want it back, how much body work/prep is required, etc.

Two years ago I had three quotes from places here that others had used. $5,000.00 and 5 months was the average response.

5 months to paint?? That's obscene!
