Default Ever have an unattended blow-out in the garage????

Was wondering if any has ever had a tire blow out while the car was parked unattended in the garage?

One of my other projects, not a Vette, had been setting in the garage for awhile and today I noticed that the right rear tire was flat. So pulled out the air hose to air it up but it would not take. Then I noticed this at the top of the tire:

So pulled the tire off, and look at what I found:

I am glad I was not it the garage when that thing went off. I would have had a heartattack

Does a blowout make a sound if no one is in the garage to hear it? Sorry, I had to add humor to your misfortune.

Good thing that didn't happen while going down the road!!

Was the tire old and perhaps dry rotted??

that's peculiar but better in the garage then at highway speed in the rain or something...

i nearly have a heart attack every time my compressor kicks in, and i'm only 25! that damn thing should have a warning beep before it turns on.

I have seen lots of those....so it does not surprise me. Many are caused by belt separation or a tire that was flat, repaired and not sealed properly allowing moisture to get in to the steel belts and allowing them to corrode. Corroded belts will eventually let go and cause a blowout. Large truck tires have this happen to them often.

Thank God that you weren't going down the road doing 80 when it happened.

My dad had that happen in the seventies. We heard a loud bang and went into the garage. One of the almost new tires on his 65 Impala blew out the sidewall.

Wow! I had that happen on a bicycle tire about 20 years ago. I was living in an apartment and kept the bike in my bedroom. I thought the apartment blew up it was so loud!

I had that happen on a spare tire mounted on the tire carrier on the rear of a Bronco II once. I was outside and I heard a loud bang. I went out to look around and see what it was but didn't find anything. Later that night I went out and leaned on the spare tire to talk to a friend and it was flat. There was a big hole in the center of the tread. That tire was old and probably weather checked from riding around on the back of the bronco for so long.

Yikes! Be thankful no one was hurt! As for the tire, Do you drive a lot of dirt roads? Those roads will nearly half the service life of a tire due to sharp rock impacts. Those rock impacts will cause a problem like that.

This happned to my 73 about 3 weeks ago on the spare tire. I was washing the car and seen these wires hanging out from under the car. so i looked at the spare and it was blown out across the tread and the belts were hanging out.
in a panoc I put the car on the lift and took the spare out and looked for damage
I didnt find anything. the tire was an original tire for the car that was worn, but looked like it was in good condition. went to the tire shop to get a new spare
I am running 255-60-15 and we tried to put one of these in the spare holder and it is to wide so they ordered one that is the not as wide
